    Imperial System vs Metric System

The majority of the world uses the metric system when it comes to measurements, while the United States implements the Imperial system (or the US Customary System).

While the two different systems use different units of measurement, there are also some slight variances between mass and volume. It is important to understand how these two systems relate to one another just in case you are using a recipe that is from a different country.

Considering the US Customary System uses both ounces and cups, it could easily be confusing to make these conversions if you live in a different part of the world.

    Metric System

The metric system is considered to be the universal way of measuring. When baking or cooking, you will see the following units:

    • Kilograms
    • Grams
    • Milliliters
    • Liters

    Imperial System

If you live in the United States, you will not typically see the same units for measurement as in different parts of the world.

    • Ounces
    • Quarts
    • Pints
    • Gallons
    • Pounds
    • Cups

How Many Grams In An Ounce

Unfortunately, while grams and ounces both measure mass, they do not convert neatly. Refer to the table below if you need help converting ounces to grams. Note that this table is only used for converting dry ingredients (more on that below).

    • 1 ounce = 28.35 grams

How Many Milliliters In An Ounce

If you are dealing with liquids then you will need to convert ounces to milliliters (if using the metric system).

    • 1 fluid ounce = 29.57 milliliters

However, you will commonly see this measurement rounded up to 30 mL to make measuring easier.

How Many Cups In 8 Ounces

If you remember anything about cups and ounces from school, you might know that 8 fluid ounces are equivalent to one cup.

    • 1 cup = 8 fluid ounces

There is a simple formula you can use to determine how many cups you need, given the number of ounces.

    • Ounces ÷ 8 = Cups
    Fluid Ounces (fl oz)CupsMilliliters
    2¼60
    4½120
    6¾180
    81240
    101¼300
    121½360
    141¾420
    162480

While this may seem pretty straightforward, it really only applies to liquid measurements. When dealing with dry ingredients, the number of cups could vary greatly.

    Dry vs Liquid Measurements

Liquid and dry measurements are incredibly different. Cups are actually not the most reliable form of measuring, and you'd get more accurate results by using a kitchen scale to weigh your ingredients in ounces (or grams).

This is due to the fact that, when measuring dry ingredients, you are measuring by weight and not volume (like with liquid ingredients). Imagine a pound of rocks and a pound of feathers- while they may way the same, you will have so many more feathers.

Therefore, there is no simple way to convert ounces to cups for dry ingredients, since it really depends on the ingredient itself!

How Many Cups In 8 Ounces Of Dry Ingredients

Here are a few measurements for some common dry ingredients.

    Flour

8 ounces of flour (227 grams) is equivalent to about 1.87 cups (or 1⅞ cups). On the other hand, 1 cup of flour is the same as 4.29 ounces (or 120 grams).

    Dry Pasta

8 ounces of dry pasta can vary based on the actual shape of the pasta you are using. If you are using a short noodle (such as macaroni), 8 ounces is roughly 2 cups of dry pasta.

    Chocolate Chips

8 ounces of chocolate chips is about 1 cup.

    Cream Cheese

8 ounces of cream cheese is equivalent to one cup. However, whipped cream cheese may be closer to 1¼ cups.

    Butter

8 ounces of butter (or 2 sticks) is equivalent to one cup. Typically, the packaging on the stick of butter will have measurements laid out for you to make it easier.

    Shredded Cheese

8 ounces of shredded cheese is equal to approximately 2 cups.

    Cocoa Powder

8 ounces of cocoa powder is equivalent to about 2¼ cups. Alternatively, 1 cup of cocoa powder weighs about 3.5 ounces (or 100 grams).

    Sugar

8 ounces of granulated sugar is equivalent to 1⅛ cups. 1 cup of sugar is the same as 7.1 ounces (200 grams).

    Brown Sugar

8 ounces of brown sugar is the same as 1⅛ cups.

    Powdered Sugar

8 ounces of powdered sugar is equivalent to 2¼ cups.
