- What To Serve With Salisbury Steak: 25+ Delicious Side Dishes To Make For Dinner!
- 💬 Reviews
Slow-cooker Salisbury steak is one of my favorite dishes when I'm in the mood for some rich, beefy comfort food without much effort. Of course, mushroom gravy is a must-have, but the rest of the meal is up in the air.
One of the great things about Salisbury steak is that it tastes excellent with a wide range of sides, from salads to mashed potatoes. As one of my family's favorite weeknight dinner ideas, I went ahead and compiled this list of my go-to recipes to enjoy alongside hamburger steaks.
1. Yellow Mashed Potatoes
Mashed potatoes and Salisbury steak are a match made in Heaven! You can stick with classic mashed potatoes like these or mix it with some cream cheese mashed potatoes, red-skin mashed potatoes, or roasted garlic mashed potatoes.
Make sure you check out my ultimate guide to making mashed potatoes, too!
2. Paula Deen’s Macaroni & Cheese
Macaroni and cheese is a comfort food classic that pairs well with everything, even Salisbury steak! This Paula Deen recipe is one of my most popular, but you could also try smoked gouda mac and cheese, Velveeta mac and cheese, or sour cream mac and cheese.
3. Roasted Brussel Sprouts
These brussel sprouts are so simple to make that you'll easily be able to add a vegetable side dish to your plate! They are crispy, delicious, and perfect for enjoying alongside Salisbury steak.
4. Roasted Red Potato Wedges
Crispy roasted potatoes can easily upgrade any meal. Not to mention, they only use four ingredients!
Dip them in the rich mushroom gravy for a real treat!
5. Brown Sugar Glazed Carrots
Adding butter and brown sugar to your carrots enhances the natural sweetness and makes them irresistible. Even the pickiest eaters will be going back for more!
Plus, they add a pop of color to your plate! You could also try these honey-glazed carrots.
6. Creamed Spinach
Tossing perfectly cooked spinach in a creamy cheese-packed sauce is always a win. You get to feel good eating some vegetables, and it tastes incredible!
Creamed kale is another great option if you aren't a fan of spinach.
7. Butter Herb Rhodes Rolls
Fluffy, buttery rolls are perfect for sopping up every last bit of that delicious gravy. These rolls only require 5 minutes of prep work, so you won't have to mess around with kneading or waiting for dough to rise!

8. Sauteed Green Beans
Vibrant and colorful green beans always look amazing next to some Salisbury steak. Add a sprinkle of Parmesan cheese to make them pop!
9. Bacon Wrapped Asparagus
Plain asparagus may not be the most exciting thing, but wrapping them up in bacon makes them delicious! Feel free to use turkey, pork, or beef bacon; it will taste great!
10. Instant Pot Au Gratin Potatoes
These rich and cheesy potatoes go well with any entree, but I love pairing them with flavorful Salisbury steak. The pressure cooker gets to do all the work here, so you don't have to!
11. Colcannon
Don't wait for St. Patrick's Day to enjoy this Irish dish. It is a terrific combination of mashed potatoes, kale, and butter!
You'll have your starch and vegetable sides combined into one delicious side!
12. Garden Salad
A classic garden salad can make any meal better. Everyone will love it whether you want to serve it as a side for your Salisbury steak or as an appetizer.
Other fantastic salad options would be a Caesar salad or a wedge salad.
13. Southern Fried Corn
This year-round staple can be made using fresh or frozen corn. It adds color and a hint of sweetness to your plate, creating the perfect pairing with beefy hamburger steaks.
14. Mashed Potato Casserole
Add milk, sour cream, butter, and cheddar cheese to make your leftover mashed potatoes extra creamy and rich. Top it off with a crispy breadcrumb topping for a simple side dish casserole.
15. Twice Baked Sweet Potatoes
If you're bored of standard potatoes, you can always mix things up by preparing some sweet potatoes!
These twice-baked potatoes are loaded with all your favorite toppings, but typical baked sweet potatoes would work just as well!
16. Roasted Vegetable Medley
The best way to add a vegetable side to your meal is by combining all your favorite veggies! They are colorful, packed with nutrients, and roasted until perfectly caramelized.
17. Cheesy Funeral Potatoes
Potatoes pair amazingly with Salisbury steak, regardless of how they are prepared.
These funeral potatoes are a staple dish in many households, combining simple ingredients like frozen hashbrowns, cornflakes, cream of chicken soup, and sour cream.
18. Zucchini Squash Casserole
If you have an abundance of squash on hand, this easy and delicious casserole will make a great side dish for your Salisbury steaks! It combines both zucchini and yellow squash in a rich and creamy sauce.
19. Creamed Corn
If you've never tried homemade creamed corn, you are definitely missing out. It is ready to eat in about 15 minutes and adds a rich and creamy element to your standard corn side dish.
20. Garlic Butter Mushrooms
What is Salisbury steak without mushrooms? Of course, most recipes include mushrooms in the gravy, but if you are a huge fan, then go ahead and add some more!
These delicious mushrooms are caramelized with butter and garlic. You won't be lacking in the flavor department!
21. Buttered Peas & Carrots
This effortless and classic side dish is a favorite among kids. It can be made in the microwave or on the stovetop for convenience.
22. Oven Baked Potatoes
Enjoy a steaming baked potato alongside your Salisbury steak with as little or as many toppings as you like! You can prepare them in the oven or the air fryer, slow cooker, or Instant Pot!
23. Oat Rolls
These are perfect if you want some made-from-scratch rolls to soak up your gravy! These yeast-based rolls take a few minutes to rise and bake, but they're completely beginner-friendly!
24. Crockpot Mac & Cheese
Preparing your macaroni and cheese in your slow cooker is a great way to free up some time in the kitchen. You can prepare everything in the morning, and it will be ready to eat whenever your Salisbury steak is finished!
25. Jiffy Corn Casserole
This 5-ingredient casserole uses boxed cornbread mix, corn, creamed corn, sour cream, and butter. It is like cornbread and a corn side dish, all combined into one!
💠Tips For Choosing What To Serve With Salisbury Steak
While all these options are perfect for Salisbury steak, you'll need to choose which ones you want to use! Keep these things in mind when planning your Salisbury steak dinner.
- Consider Flavors: Opt for side dishes that complement Salisbury steak's savory and slightly sweet flavors. Creamy and rich sides, such as mashed potatoes or cauliflower mash, work well.
- Balance the Plate: Aim for a well-balanced meal by including proteins, carbohydrates, and vegetables.
- Seasonal Choices: Select side dishes based on the season. For instance, roasted root vegetables could be suitable during colder months, while a light salad or grilled vegetables might be more suitable in the summer.
- Dietary Considerations: Take into account any dietary restrictions or preferences of your guests or family.

What To Serve With Salisbury Steak: 25+ Delicious Side Dishes To Make For Dinner!
Ingredients
- 2 lbs yellow potatoes (washed and quartered)
- 2 tablespoon salt (to taste)
- 1½ cups heavy cream
- ½ cup butter (cut into 1 tablespoon pats, use in 3 portions - 3 tablespoons, 3 tablespoons, and 2 tablespoons)
Instructions
- In a large pot, add in your quartered potatoes and cover them with 1 to 2 inches of cold water and then season generously with salt.
- Bring the water to a boil and cook the potatoes until they can easily be pierced with a fork, about 20-25 minutes. Once cooked, drain the potatoes.
- Add your heavy cream to a small saucepan and bring it to a boil (*see note).
- Meanwhile, while you are waiting for your cream to boil, press your potatoes through a potato ricer (*see note).
- Immediately add in â…“ portion of the hot heavy cream and the first 3 tablespoons of butter and mix it into the potatoes. Repeat this process 2 more times with the remaining heavy cream, mixing until the butter is melted and everything is well incorporated.
- Taste your potatoes and add salt as needed. Top with freshly ground black pepper and serve immediately.
Notes
- Peeling your potatoes is optional, but they are much easier to run through your ricer if peeled.
- Use 1 tablespoon of salt in your water per each 1 pound of potatoes being boiled for any mashed potatoes recipe to add flavor.
- For more information on how to quickly scald your cream, check out my post about scalding milk for mashed potatoes!
- Never put potatoes into a food processor or blender, as it is too rough and will make your mashed potatoes gluey and gummy.
- To store: Once completely cool, keep your potatoes in a sealed container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
- To freeze: Freeze your potatoes in single-size portions for up to 2 months. Check out my guide on freezing mashed potatoes.
- To reheat: Reheat your mashed potatoes on the stovetop over low heat. For more tips and tricks, take a look at my article on the best methods for reheating mashed potatoes.Â
