🔪 How To Make Butter Herb Rhodes Rolls

Butter herb Rhodes rolls are incredibly easy to prep and quick to bake after the rolls rise! Take out a 9X13 baking pan, basting brush, and measuring spoons to get started.

This recipe will make 20 servings. There is more than enough to feed the entire family, and maybe even have leftovers!

  1. Prep. Lightly grease a 9X13 baking pan. Place 20 Rhodes rolls into the pan with even space in between each roll. Take a warm, damp kitchen towel and cover the rolls (you can also use a piece of plastic wrap that has been sprayed with non-stick spray). Then, flip it to drape over the rolls with the non-stick spray facing the rolls. Allow the frozen rolls to rise for 3-5 hours and double in size.
  2. Bake. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) after the rolls rise. Melt ½ cup butter and add ¼ teaspoon of salt, ¼ teaspoon of garlic powder, and ¼ teaspoon of ground thyme. Mix until blended and pour the majority of the butter mixture over the tops of the rolls. Leave enough butter (about ¼) to brush over the top of the rolls at the end. Bake for 15-20 minutes in the middle of your oven's center rack.
  3. Serve. Remove the rolls from the oven and brush the leftover butter mixture on the rolls. Allow rolls to cool slightly before serving.

These delicious and fluffy rolls are great to make with prime rib roast, oven roasted turkey, or any holiday meal that calls for a side of bread. They are also flavorful enough to enjoy on their own! Enjoy!

💭 Angela's Tips & Recipe Notes

  • These are the standard Rhodes rolls that are 1.3-ounces per roll (36 or 72-count packages available), not the larger Texas rolls that are in 24-count packaging. Use 15 rolls for the Texas rolls instead of 20 rolls. The larger Texas rolls may also take closer to 5 hours to thaw and rise.
  • Quick thaw method: Place rolls in a 9X13 pan with even space in between, then preheat oven to 175°F (80°C). Once the oven is preheated, turn it off and put the rolls in the oven for 1 hour and check the rolls every 30 minutes after the first hour until they have doubled in size. Once the rolls are thawed, remove the pan from the oven and repeat steps 2 and 3 above.
  • Overnight thawing method: Place rolls in a 9X13 pan with even space in between, then place the pan into the refrigerator for 8-10 hours. The rolls should be soft and fluffed out. Follow steps 2 and 3 to bake.
  • Make sure not to let the rolls rise too much or the texture will be less desirable.

🥡 Storing & Reheating

Put rolls in an airtight container or plastic Ziploc bag and store them at room temperature for up to 3 days.

You can also freeze baked Rhodes rolls in a heavy-duty freezer bag for up to 3 months.

Reheating Butter Herb Rhodes Rolls

Wrap leftover rolls in aluminum foil and place in oven at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes. If frozen, bake for 13-15 minutes at 350°F (175°C).

❓ Recipe FAQs

Can I Refreeze Baked Rhodes Rolls?

Absolutely! You may freeze Rhodes rolls once they are baked, for up to 3 months. However, you should not refreeze thawed Rhodes rolls that haven't been baked because this could ruin the yeast in the rolls.

Can You Let Rhodes Rolls To Rise Too Long?

Yes, that would ultimately cause the texture and flavor to become less desirable. If these rolls rise for longer than the suggested amount of time of 3-5 hours, they can develop a sour taste and a harder texture.

Why Are My Rhodes Rolls Not Rising?

If your Rhodes rolls do not rise, it could mean a few different things. Your rolls may have thawed a bit and were refrozen before you even bought the package. Or it could also be that the yeast in the rolls is old if your rolls are close to the expiration date. Both of these factors would deactivate the yeast and that is why your rolls won't rise.
