The mini marshmallows are completely optional, but they make these candied yams extra sweet and gooey! They're a fun addition and an easy way to get the kiddos to try yams.

    • Canned Yams - A 40-ounce can of yams.
    • Butter - ¼  cup or ½ a stick.
    • Light brown sugar - ¼ cup, packed.
    • Molasses - 1 tablespoon.
    • Cinnamon - ½ teaspoon.
    • Ground Cloves - ⅛ teaspoon of ground cloves or allspice.
    • Salt - 1 pinch (roughly 1/16th of a teaspoon).

*Be sure to see the recipe card below for ingredients, amounts & instructions!*

    🔪 Step-By-Step Instructions

Slow cooker candied yams are such a breeze to make! Grab your crockpot or slow cooker, a knife, and a small microwave-safe bowl for melting butter.

    1. Prep. Open your 40-ounce can of yams and drain out the liquid. Cut any large yams into smaller pieces, if desired. Melt your butter (the easiest way is in the microwave in short 20-second increments).
    2. Combine. Add all of the ingredients besides the marshmallows to your slow cooker (yams, ¼ cup brown sugar, butter, 1 tablespoon molasses, ½ teaspoon cinnamon, ⅛ teaspoon ground cloves, and 1 pinch of salt).
    3. Cook. Cook on high for 1-2 hours or on low for 2-3 hours.
    4. Serve. At the end of the cooking time, add the mini marshmallows (if using) and heat for 15 more minutes. Then set the slow cooker to warm (*see note) and serve.

Everyone knows candied yams go with roasted turkey or glazed honey ham around the holidays. However, you can serve them up whenever you want with other meaty mains like fried chicken or cast-iron pork chops. Enjoy!

    💭 Angela's Tips & Recipe Notes

    • It's easiest to serve your candied yams from the crockpot. Keep them on the warm setting for up to 2-3 hours. Stir and add water as needed if the syrup is getting too thick or drying out.
    • To use fresh yams, you will want to peel 2.5 pounds of yams and slice them into 1-inch slices. Follow the recipe as directed, but cook on high for 4 hours.
    • Storing: In an airtight container or freezer bag, leftover candied yams will last for 4-5 days in the fridge or up to 6 months in the freezer.
    • Reheating: Reheat single servings in the microwave. Large amounts can be reheated in a baking dish in the oven preheated to 350°F (175°C) for 20-25 minutes.
