With crispy fried pork cutlets coated in a rich and earthy mushroom gravy, jagerschnitzel is a German comfort food recipe that makes an excellent family dinner. To round out the meal, you have to throw in a few complimentary side dishes.
German recipes are an obvious choice and will never steer you wrong, but you aren't limited to them. Here are a few of my favorite sides that you can mix and match however you like for a homecooked jagerschnitzel dinner.
1. German Potato Salad
German potato salad has a completely different flavor profile from American potato salad. It has a sweet and tangy vinegar dressing with diced onions and crispy bacon that's served warm.
2. Buttered Egg Noodles
I love when the simplest combinations taste the best and buttered egg noodles are a prime example. Sometimes I slice the pork cutlets and serve them with the gravy right over the noodles, other times I serve the noodles on the side. It works either way.
3. Sweet and Sour Cabbage
Apple, cloves, vinegar, and sugar give sweet and sour red cabbage its signature tangy sweet flavor. It's often used as a condiment in Germany but makes a light and tasty side dish with savory jagerschnitzel.
4. Red Skin Mashed Potatoes
Rustic red-skin mashed potatoes are the perfect place to put your extra mushroom gravy. Red potatoes are a tasty change from russet mashed potatoes with their stronger flavor, less starch, and flavorful peel.
5. Buttered Peas and Carrots
Buttered peas and carrots are a classic veggie side dish that's ready to eat in just 15 minutes. You could even toss in some pearl onions or fresh herbs to dress them up a little bit.
6. Air Fryer Home Fries
Fried pork and crispy fried potatoes are a match made in heaven and now you can cut back the cooking time on your home fries with your air fryer. Classic homemade air fryer French fries work too, but there's something so satisfying about these crispy little potato cubes in gravy.

7. Zucchini Fritters
It's easy to forget these crunchy fritters are made with zucchini because they sure feel like a cheat meal. With a little Parmesan cheese, minced garlic, salt, and pepper, each bite is crispy and perfectly seasoned.
8. Rice Pilaf
Rice pilaf is more than just rice, it's a combination of small orzo pasta and long-grain white rice seasoned and simmered in broth. It's a great way to elevate your typical side of white rice, although plain rice would be perfectly tasty too.
9. Garlic Green Beans
Green beans always taste great with pork, and jagerschnitzel is no exception. These garlic green beans are buttery and flavorful, plus they're loaded with chunks of savory bacon.
10. Instant Pot Buttered Cabbage
If sweet and sour red cabbage doesn't sound appealing, try this tender buttered green cabbage instead. All it takes is 4 ingredients and about 10 minutes in your Instant Pot pressure cooker and it's cooked to perfection.
11. Roasted Butternut Squash
Roasted butternut squash is available year-round, but it always brings on the fall feels September through December when it's in season. Just peel and cube the squash, toss with olive oil, salt, and pepper, and pop it in the oven.
12. Rustic Bread
Any bread is good bread with jagerschnitzel, but homemade rustic bread is a perfect choice if I had to choose one. There's no kneading, you don't need a stand mixer, and it bakes up wonderfully soft and chewy with a nice crust.
13. Southern Coleslaw
The cool and crispy crunch of coleslaw is a much-needed contrast to the rich, warm, and savory flavors of jagerschnitzel. For the best flavor, make it the night before and keep it covered in the fridge, just drain any excess liquid and stir before serving.

14. Bacon Cheddar Green Bean Casserole
There's no law saying green bean casserole has to be reserved for Thanksgiving. It's tasty year-round and this homemade version with bacon and cheddar cheese tastes great with the crunch of crispy pork cutlets.
15. Baked Sweet Potatoes
Baked sweet potatoes are so easy to customize and whether you like them sweet or savory, they taste fabulous with fried pork. I like mine with a little butter, salt, and pepper while my daughter prefers butter and cinnamon sugar.
💠Tips For Choosing What To Serve With Jagerschnitzel
In my opinion, Jagerschnitzel would taste great with almost any side you'd serve with shake and bake pork chops. Here are a few more helpful guidelines to consider when menu planning.
- Keep it authentic. This is more of an option than a suggestion. You can lean into jagerschnitzel's German roots and go all out with a German-inspired meal. Homemade German spaetzle, sweet and sour cabbage, or sauerkraut with potatoes are all great side options.
- Mushroom Gravy. The rich and creamy mushroom gravy tastes fabulous over mashed potatoes or rice. Even a simple slice of buttered French bread, anything to soak up that tasty sauce.
- Veggies. These crispy pork cutlets slathered in gravy could use some contrast with a refreshing vegetable side dish or two. Roasted broccoli, sauteed cauliflower, asparagus, or even a quick canned corn recipe would hit the spot.
- Gravy on the side. If you keep the gravy on the side, any leftover jagerschnitzel will make for the most delicious fried pork sandwich the next day.
