My easy 4-ingredient Instant Pot Buttered Cabbage is a delicious side dish you'll want to make again and again! A pressure cooker is my favorite way to make tender, buttery cabbage in a jiffy!

Delicious Instant Pot buttered cabbage served as a dinner side dish.
Savory buttered cabbage doesn't get any better than when it's made in an Instant Pot!

It's so easy to make perfectly cooked buttered cabbage right in your Instant Pot!

Cabbage is such a versatile vegetable, and when cooked correctly it can be downright indulgent and delicious. If you are lucky enough to have an Instant Pot, you can whip up some buttered cabbage with practically no effort at all.

When cooked with a pressure cooker, cabbage becomes tender but not at all mushy This is why I love this method just as much as sauteing cabbage in a skillet.

If you aren't a fan of cabbage, I still suggest you try this recipe- it might just change your mind about eating your greens!

❤️ Why You'll Love This Recipe!

It's Hands-Off! You just add all the ingredients to your Instant Pot and leave it to do its thing!

Only 4 Ingredients! These ingredients are super simple and you likely won't need a trip to the store!

It's Delicious! This buttery cabbage only needs salt & pepper to taste absolutely amazing!

    🥘 Ingredients

If you have a head of cabbage, you probably have everything else you need. There's really not much to it.

Instant Pot buttered cabbage ingredients with labels.
    • 1 head Green Cabbage - It should be washed and chopped into roughly 1-inch chunks.
    • 1 cup Chicken Broth - Chicken stock would also suffice.
    • ¼ cup Butter - You may want to lessen the salt if using salted butter. Use up to ½ a cup if you like it extra buttery.
    • ½ teaspoon Salt & Pepper - To your preference.

*Be sure to see the recipe card below for ingredients, amounts & instructions!*

    🔪 Step-By-Step Instructions

Follow these 3 simple steps for perfectly cooked cabbage. All you need is an Instant Pot or pressure cooker!

Process photo 1 of adding ingredients to the Instant Pot.
    1. Combine. Place 1 head of chopped green cabbage in your Instant Pot. Then, add 1 cup chicken broth, ¼ cup butter, and a ½ teaspoon each of salt & pepper. Stir to combine.
    2. Cook. Seal the lid securely and close the venting knob then set to cook on high pressure using the manual function for 4 minutes. Once the cooking cycle has completed, carefully vent your Instant Pot fully using the quick release.
    3. Serve. Carefully remove the lid to your Instant Pot and stir the cabbage. Taste to see if you need to adjust the seasonings, and serve immediately.

Buttered cabbage goes wonderfully with any number of meaty main dishes like my baked chicken thighs. It's a simple side dish with tons of flavor! Enjoy!

    💭 Angela's Tips & Recipe Notes

    • To make this dish vegetarian, substitute vegetable broth for the chicken broth.
    • For extra chicken flavor, add a bouillon cube to the broth. This will also make the broth saltier, so adjust your salt as needed.
    • It is also delicious with a squeeze of lemon, or your favorite hot sauce.

    🥡 Storing & Reheating

Place leftover buttered cabbage into an airtight container and refrigerate it for up to 3-4 days.

I do not recommend freezing cabbage. Cabbage is full of water, so its texture changes when frozen.

    Reheating

You can reheat your cabbage in the microwave for a few minutes or in a skillet on the stove over medium-low heat just until warmed through.

    ❓ FAQ

What's the best way to cut cabbage into chunks?

First, cut your cabbage in half length-wise through the thick stem, or 'core'. Use a sharp knife to remove the triangular core. Once it is removed, lay the cabbage flat and slice it into strips. From there, you can stop if wanting strips or chop to desired size.

Can I add other veggies to this?

You can! I find that carrots or carrot strips are delicious with cabbage. You could also saute onions and add them, or add them raw with the cabbage.
