Who doesn't love Rice Krispies Treats? I already have recipes for the classic version, candy corn treats, peanut butter, chocolate peanut butter, and ones dipped in chocolate!

They are so well-loved at my house that we bring them to every occasion and class party. My daughter loves to add the sprinkles on top for some extra pizzazz, but it is completely optional.

🥘 Ingredients

  • Rice Krispies - You can't have Rice Krispies Treats with classic Rice Krispies cereal.
  • Marshmallows - Marshmallows add sweetness and hold all of the cereal together.
  • Butter - Butter is melted together with the marshmallows to make them smooth and creamy.
  • Gel Food Coloring - You'll need six (6) colors for a true rainbow. Of course, you can tweak this using any colors you like.
  • Sprinkles (optional) - Some fun rainbow sprinkles can make these treats even more exciting.
  • Vanilla Extract (optional) - A small amount of vanilla extract will do the trick if you want extra flavor.

Be sure to see the free printable recipe card below for ingredients, exact amounts & instructions with tips!

🔪 How To Make Rainbow Rice Krispies Treats

This no-bake treat is incredibly simple, especially since we'll melt the marshmallows in the microwave. You will need a 9x13 baking dish, several bowls, measuring cups, and a silicone spatula.

This recipe will yield 24 sweet treats.

Prepare the Ingredients

Step 1: Prepare the cereal. Generously butter your 9x13 baking pan. Portion each layer of Rice Krispies into separate bowls (2 cups (54 grams) per bowl, or 12 cups (324 grams) total).

Step 2: Portion the marshmallows. Divide 15 ounces (425 grams) of marshmallows into 6 portions (or however many color layers are desired). Place the first portion in a medium mixing bowl and add 1½ tablespoons of butter (8 tablespoons in total, divided into each color).

Melt, Color, And Assemble

Step 3: Melt the marshmallows. Microwave marshmallow and butter combination for 1 minute (depending on your microwave, you may need an additional 30 seconds heating, but if your marshmallows are nice and fluffy, they should be ready to mix. A few semi-solid spots in the marshmallows are OK).

Step 4: Color. Stir the heated marshmallows, add your desired food gel color, then stir in one of the portions of Rice Krispies until well coated. The optional ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract can be added for each layer.

Step 5: Assemble the layers. You can wet your fingers, butter them, or use a buttered spatula and press each layer down firmly, evenly, and into the corners of the baking dish. Clean your medium mixing bowl and repeat for each layer.

Step 6: Add sprinkles. (Optional) Rainbow sprinkles can be added on top. Let the treats cool completely before slicing.

💭 Angela's Pro Tips & Recipe Notes

  • Press firmly. I would advise against firmly pressing your Rice Krispies treats into the pan. However, you must press them in more firmly to spread the layers evenly and keep them fitted together nicely.
  • Customize with your colors. If you aren't using six colors to make a rainbow, divide the total amount of cereal, marshmallows, and butter to match however many layers you will use.
  • Use foil. You can line your baking dish with aluminum foil and then generously butter or spray the foil. This way, you can lift the treats from the dish for easier cutting and serving.
  • Storage. Keep your treats in a sealed container at room temperature for 2-3 days.
Fantastic, fun, and colorful Rainbow Rice Krispies Treats are an easy no-bake treat for all occasions!

Instructions

  • Generously butter your 9 x 13 baking pan. Portion your first layer's worth (2 cups) of Rice Krispies into a bowl. Portion out additional amounts of the Rice Krispies into other bowls to make the process move quicker.
  • Divide your 15 oz of marshmallows into 6 portions. Place the first portion in a medium mixing bowl and add the first 1 ½ tablespoon of butter.
  • Microwave marshmallow and butter combination for 1 minute (depending on your microwave, you may need an additional 30 second heating, but if your marshmallows are nice and fluffy they should be ready to mix. A few semi-solid spots in the marshmallows is OK).
  • Stir the heated marshmallows, add your desired food gel color, then stir in the 2 cup portion of Rice Krispies until well coated. *A ½ teaspoon of vanilla extract can be added for each layer, if desired.
  • You can wet your fingers, butter them, or use a buttered spatula, and press each layer down firmly and evenly and into the corners of the baking dish. Clean your medium mixing bowl and repeat for each layer.
  • (Optional) Rainbow sprinkles can be added on top.

Notes

*Typically I would advise against pressing your Rice Krispies treats into the pan too firmly. However, to spread the layers evenly and keep them fitted together nicely, you will need to press them in more firmly.
