McDonald's Big Mac Sauce Copycat Recipe

If you're a fan of the McDonald's Big Mac burger, then you may have wondered how to make their irresistibly tangy special sauce at home. Don't worry, I've cracked the code for you, and all it takes is a handful of ingredients that you may already have in the kitchen!

All you have to do is combine mayonnaise, sweet relish, mustard, BBQ sauce, apple cider vinegar, and a few seasonings. This homemade version is so incredibly quick and easy to make, you'll never have to wait in the drive-thru line again!

🥘 Ingredients

This delicious and tangy sauce requires a handful of kitchen staples that you may already have! Any whole egg mayonnaise brand will work in this recipe.

Tall image showing big mac sauce ingredients.
  • Mayonnaise - ½ cup of mayonnaise. For best results, always use quality mayonnaise. That's Hellman's (or Best Foods on the West Coast) and Duke's brand mayonnaise are my go-to favorites.
  • Sweet Pickle Relish - 3 tablespoons of sweet pickle relish.
  • Mustard - 1 ½ tablespoons of mustard.
  • BBQ Sauce - ½ tablespoon of BBQ sauce.
  • Apple Cider Vinegar - ½ tablespoon of apple cider vinegar.
  • Garlic Powder - ½ teaspoon of garlic powder.
  • Onion Powder - ½ teaspoon of onion powder.
  • Paprika - ½ teaspoon of paprika.
  • Salt - ¼ teaspoon of salt.

🔪 How To Make Big Mac Sauce

Big Mac sauce is so easy to make, all you have to do is mix the ingredients together in a bowl and chill it in the refrigerator! You will need a small mixing bowl, a silicone whisk, and some measuring spoons to get started.

This sauce recipe yields approximately ¾ of a cup, which is enough for 5 burgers!

  1. Mix. In a small mixing bowl, add in your ½ cup of mayonnaise, 3 tablespoons of sweet relish, 1 ½ tablespoons of mustard, ½ tablespoon of BBQ sauce, ½ tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, ½ teaspoon of garlic powder, ½ teaspoon of onion powder, ½ teaspoon of paprika, and ¼ teaspoon of salt. Whisk until well combined.
  2. Chill. Cover and place the bowl in your refrigerator to chill for at least 1 hour.
  3. Serve. Stir and serve on burgers, fries, or salads.

My homemade Big Mac sauce will quickly become your new favorite burger topping! You may even want to use it as a dipping sauce for your fries, or serve it over a wedge salad! Try it on my copycat Travis Scott burger! Enjoy!

💭 Angela's Tips & Recipe Notes

  • This sauce recipe makes 6 servings of 2 tablespoons each.
  • There are disagreements online about whether sweet or dill pickle relish is best in a homemade Big Mac sauce. I still advocate sweet pickle relish for the closest flavor (even though I am a big fan of dill pickle relish and will usually pick that over sweet relish any time).
  • For best results, always use quality mayonnaise. That's Hellman's (or Best Foods on the West Coast) and Duke's brand mayonnaise are my go-to favorites. Never use miracle whip for this recipe! In addition to my favorite brands of mayo, other whole egg mayonnaise brands can also be used.
  • For a kick of spiciness to the sauce, you could add a few drops of sriracha.

🥡 Storing

Keep your big mac sauce in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 weeks. Give it a stir before serving.

❓ Recipe FAQs

What Can I Use This Big Mac Sauce On?

You can practically use Big Mac sauce on anything! Not only does it taste great on burgers, but it also tastes delicious on sandwiches and fries too. It also would make a tasty dipping sauce for onion rings as well!

Is Big Mac Sauce The Same As Thousand Island Dressing?

It's a commonly shared belief that Big Mac Sauce is the same as thousand island dressing, but it's really not. Thousand island dressing is typically made with ketchup and a lot of Big Mac sauces use french dressing. My homemade sauce does not include french dressing because the mustard, BBQ sauce, and apple cider vinegar provide enough tanginess.

Can I freeze Big Mac Sauce?

No, I don't recommend freezing Big Mac sauce. Since this sauce is a mayonnaise-based condiment, freezing wouldn't be a great idea. Plus, it's so easy to make, you can whip it fast any time!

Good flavor but was missing the French dressing tang I'm used to with big mac sauce. I added a tablespoon of ketchup and an extra teaspoon of apple cider vinegar. Nice recipe to have for those last minute burger nights!
