Best Burger Seasoning Recipe
Burgers are easily one of the most classic American foods out there. People love gathering together for barbecues and cookouts so they can hang out with their friends and family while firing up the grill to cook some juicy burgers!
They are easily customized by changing up the types of meat (like elk, bison, or venison) and then piled high with all of your favorite toppings! However, before you get to pile on the lettuce and tomatoes, you must first make sure that your meat is properly seasoned for maximum flavor!

Making a homemade spice blend is really quite simple as all you do is mix it all together! Just grab your measuring spoons, a small bowl, and an airtight container or spice jar to store it in.
This recipe will make about 2¾ tablespoons of seasoning, which is great for seasoning about 5-6 pounds of beef.
- Measure your spices. In a small mixing bowl, add 1 tablespoon of paprika, ½ tablespoon of smoked paprika, 1¼ teaspoon of salt, 1 teaspoon of pepper, ½ teaspoon each of brown sugar, garlic powder, and onion powder, and ¼ teaspoon of both cumin and cayenne pepper.

💭 Angela's Pro Tips & Notes
- This blend will yield about 2¾ tablespoons of seasoning.
- For seasoning burgers, you'll want to use 1-1½ teaspoons of seasoning per pound of ground beef.
- For some more spice, you can always add a dash more cayenne pepper!
- If my burger seasoning has been stored for a while, I like to give it a quick shake or stir before using it to make sure everything is mixed together.
🥡 Storing
Keep your spices stored in a sealed container or spice jar in a cool, dark place away from direct sunlight. When stored properly, your spices can remain fresh for up to 3 years. However, the freshness may begin to fade sooner.

❓ Recipe FAQs
There is actually a right and wrong way to season your burgers! You'll want to sprinkle the seasoning onto the meat immediately before you place it on the grill.
When meat is seasoned, the salt and spices draw the moisture out. If you let the uncooked meat sit with the seasoning on for too long before cooking (more than 3 minutes), it can cause you to have dry burgers!
My personal preference is to use the burger seasoning as more of a dry rub, seasoning the entire patty immediately before grilling it. Remember that you don't want the meat to be seasoned for more than about 3 minutes prior to cooking, so it is easier if you don't add the seasoning into the mix.
For best results, you'll want to add your seasoning to the patties before cooking. This allows the flavors to really combine with the meat and create a nice crust during the cooking process.
