🔪 How To Make Double Chocolate Banana Bread
One of the things I love about this bread recipe is how easy it is! Simply grab your loaf pans and a mixing bowl to begin!
This recipe will make one standard-size loaf or two smaller loaves, which is about 12 servings.
Make Banana Bread
- Preheat. To get started, preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and grease your loaf pan(s) or spray with non-stick cooking spray (*see note).
- Combine ingredients. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ½ cup of melted butter with 4 bananas and mash up the bananas. Then, add the 2 eggs, 2 tablespoons each of milk and vanilla extract, 1½ teaspoons each of baking soda and baking powder, and 1 cup of sugar. Stir to combine.
- Add dry ingredients. Stir the ½ cup of unsweetened cocoa into your wet ingredients, then gradually add the 2 cups of flour and stir until you have a somewhat thick and lumpy batter.
- Bake (small loaves). Pour the batter into your greased loaf pan(s) and bake at 375°F (190°C) for 45 minutes, if using the smaller loaf pans (*see note).
- Bake (large loaves). If you are using a larger loaf pan for one loaf of double chocolate banana bread, then bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 1 hour before checking your banana bread with an inserted knife. When baking a larger loaf, I start checking at the hour mark but the bake time runs about 1 hour 15 minutes.
- Cool. Remove the loaves from the oven and allow them to cool in the loaf pan(s) for 10 minutes before transferring them to a wire cooling rack to cool completely.
Prepare The Ganache
- Make the ganache. Once the chocolate banana bread loaves are cooled, heat the ¼ cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips and ¼ cup of butter in a small microwave-safe bowl using 30-second increments. Stir between each 30-second interval until your ganache is smooth and shiny.
- Add chocolate chips. Spread or drizzle over your chocolate banana bread. Top by sprinkling ⅛ cup of mini chocolate chips over the ganache.
This banana bread is incredibly moist, tender, and delicious! Eat it by itself or add a smear of peanut butter! Enjoy!
💭 Angela's Pro Tips & Notes
- Using room temperature ingredients helps to ensure that the batter mixes together perfectly without overmixing, creating the best texture for your bread!
- To make two loaves, use the 8"x4" smaller loaf pans and bake at 375°F (190°C).
- To make one loaf, use a standard 9"x5" loaf pan and bake at a reduced temperature of 350°F (175°C) to prevent scorching the crust of your double chocolate banana bread.
- Check the loaves by inserting a knife through the center of the loaf. You can have crumbs attached, but should not still have a batter appearance on the inserted knife.
- Feel free to mix in some tasty additions like chopped pecans, walnuts, (more) chocolate chips, banana slices, or more!
🥡 Storing
Store your banana bread in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days.
If you keep it sealed in the fridge, your bread will last for a week.
Finally, this double chocolate banana bread freezes great! Simply wrap it tightly and pop it into the freezer for up to 3 months. Allow it to thaw in the fridge before enjoying.
❓ Recipe FAQs
Using too much flour can cause your banana bread to dry out. The best way to measure flour is to scoop it using a spoon (not the measuring cup), and then level it with a knife. If you use the measuring cup to scoop it, you could be packing in too much flour.
Nope! When it comes to banana bread, there is no such thing as a banana that is too ripe! Even black bananas (as long as they are not moldy) will work for this recipe.
Remember, the darker the bananas, the sweeter they are!
Don't overmix your banana bread batter as it can lead to a dense and tough loaf of bread! Mix the batter just until everything is evenly distributed and then stop mixing!
