🔪 How To Make Cinnamon Sugar Baked Donuts
Both the doughnuts and the cinnamon sugar coating are super easy to make! All you need is measuring spoons and cups, a mixing bowl, and a donut pan.
This will make enough batter for 18 donuts. If you are baking mini donuts, it will make about 4 times as many!
Make The Batter
- Prep. Lightly grease your donut pans (or mini donut pans) and preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Cream wet ingredients. Add the wet ingredients (¼ cup softened butter, ½ cup oil, ½ cup sugar, and ⅓ cup light brown sugar) to a medium-sized mixing bowl and cream them together. Then, mix in the 2 beaten eggs, 2 teaspoons of baking powder, 1½ teaspoons of vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon of nutmeg, and ¾ teaspoon of salt. Continue mixing until everything is evenly distributed.
- Mix. Add 2⅔ cups of all-purpose flour and 1 cup of buttermilk or milk in gradual amounts, alternating between the two.
Bake The Cinnamon Sugar Donuts
- Transfer the batter. Pour the donut batter into your greased donut pan, filling each mold approximately ⅔ of the way full.
- Bake. Put the donut pan on the center of the middle rack of your oven and bake for 8- 10 minutes. They are ready when they have risen and are golden on the bottom (you should be able to see lightly browned edges).
- Transfer to cooling rack. Pull your baked donuts from the oven and let them sit in the pan for 5 more minutes before you flip them onto a wire cooling rack.
- Coat with cinnamon sugar. Brush 2 tablespoons of melted butter over the warm donuts. Once cooled, combine 1 tablespoon of cinnamon and ¼ cup of sugar and use it to coat the buttered donuts on all sides.
These cinnamon sugar-baked donuts are delicious as-is. However, you can't go wrong serving them with some scrambled eggs, fried potatoes, and a cup of joe! Enjoy!
💭 Tips & Notes
- After your wet and dry ingredients are evenly dispersed and well-combined, there is no need to keep mixing. Overmixing the batter will make the donuts tough!
- You may use a spoon to transfer the batter into the prepared pans, or use a piping bag or plastic storage bag with the corner snipped off.
- Baked donuts tend to dry out easily. Test them by sticking a toothpick into the thickest part of the donut. It should come out with a few moist crumbs stuck to it.
🥡 Storing
Baked donuts can be kept at room temperature for up to 24 hours. Store them in an airtight container or Ziploc storage bag to keep them fresh.
Once cooled, your donuts may be frozen (preferably before filling or icing them). Place them in a heavy-duty freezer bag and squeeze out the excess air.
Thaw the donuts in the microwave at 50% power and enjoy within 6 months.
❓Are Baked Donuts Healthy?
I wouldn't call them healthy per se. However, they are much healthier than fried donuts! Not using oil reduces the amount of fat in these donuts significantly.
❓Can You Frost Baked Donuts?
Yes! Just be sure to wait until your donuts are cool. Warm donuts will melt the icing.
Try my vanilla or chocolate icing specifically for donuts!
❓What Are Cake Donuts?
A cake donut is essentially made from cake batter. They are leavened with baking soda which gives them a different texture than fried yeast donuts.
