Starbucks Cafe Mocha Copycat Recipe

It seems like everyone is a huge fan of Starbucks, right? I will admit that their drinks are delicious, but sometimes I'd rather not make the trip to the coffee shop when I could make the same drink at home!

🔪 How To Make Starbucks Caffe Mocha

I strongly recommend making your own mocha sauce, as it is completely amazing! Not to mention, the overall drink is pretty great, too! You will need your measuring utensils, a saucepan, and a mug.

This recipe is for 1 serving of coffee, but it will make enough mocha sauce to be able to make about 2.5 servings (at 3 tablespoons each). Therefore, you can easily make a few mugs of coffee with just one batch of mocha sauce!

Make The Mocha Sauce

Step 1: Combine. Combine ½ cup (118 milliliters) of strong brewed coffee, ½ cup (100 grams) of sugar, ½ cup (43 grams) of dark cocoa powder, and ⅛ teaspoon (0.75 grams) of salt in a medium saucepan. Stir and bring to a low simmer at medium heat.

Step 2: Simmer. Stir frequently while heating and simmer for 10 minutes once the sugar has completely dissolved.

Step 3: Cool. Remove from heat and add ½ tablespoon (7 milliliters) of vanilla extract. Mix thoroughly and allow the mocha sauce to cool completely before storing or using it in drinks.

Step 4: Brew. Brew 1 shot (44 milliliters) of espresso. Pour the espresso and 3 tablespoons (44 milliliters) of mocha sauce into your mug, then gently stir to combine them.

Step 5: Froth the milk. Heat and froth 1 cup (237 milliliters) of milk. (*See notes for alternative methods if you don’t have an espresso machine.)

Step 6: Assemble. Gently pour the frothed milk into your espresso. Fill the mug until it’s almost full, then add some whipped cream.

Step 7: Serve. Top with chocolate shavings or a drizzle more of the mocha sauce.

💭 Angela's Pro Tips & Recipe Notes

  • You can froth milk using a whisk once it’s heated to 140°F (60°C). Use a whisk or frother to double the volume; start whisking with the whisk at the base of your bowl or container. Whisk until the milk doubles in volume, then whisk just below the froth.
  • Alternatively, a hand blender (immersion blender) can also be used in a pinch. Be careful of the milk overflowing as it’s hot!
  • Of course, a handheld milk frother is also a great choice if you don't have an espresso machine.
  • This recipe will make ½-⅔ cups of mocha sauce. You will only need 3 tablespoons for 1 serving of coffee, so save the rest for later!

🥄 Make Ahead Options

While the drink itself is best when served immediately, you can easily prepare your homemade mocha sauce in advance!

Once cooled, it can be stored in a sealed container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week.

❓ Recipe FAQs

What Is The Difference Between A Caffe Mocha And A Latte?

A caffe mocha is special because it includes chocolate! A latte, on the other hand, is just a combination of steamed milk and espresso. In short, a caffe mocha is just a latte with added chocolate (plus whipped cream!)

Can I Make An Iced Caffe Mocha?

Absolutely! All you need to do is skip heating your milk. Then, gently stir together your espresso, mocha sauce, and milk. Finally, pour the mixture over ice and top with whipped cream.

Do I Have To Use Mocha Sauce?

No, you could swap the mocha sauce out for an equivalent amount of store-bought chocolate syrup. However, I definitely think the homemade mocha sauce makes it tastier and more true to the original drink.
