🥘 Microwave Sweet Potatoes Ingredients

A microwaved sweet potato is pretty straightforward and simple. You can get creative with the toppings if you want to dress it up to be sweet or savory depending on the main course!

  • Sweet Potato - 1 medium sweet potato.
  • Butter - 1 tablespoon of butter (optional).

*Be sure to see the free printable recipe card below for ingredients, exact amounts & instructions with tips!*

🍠 Baked Sweet Potato Topping Ideas

Here are a few ideas for baked sweet potato toppings! From sweet to savory, these tried and true toppings are totally delicious!

  • Brown Sugar- A delicious and simple topping to add that extra sweet caramel flavor! Mix in some cinnamon for an extra tasty treat!
  • Guacamole- A great topping to make sweet potatoes Tex-Mex style!
  • Buffalo Chicken- A spicy chicken topping mixed with Frank's Red Hot Sauce and ranch!
  • Chili- Make your favorite chili or try mine as a filling meal!
  • Mini Marshmallows- Use mini marshmallows for gooey deliciousness or you can use jarred marshmallow fluff!

🔪 How To Make Microwave Baked Sweet Potatoes

The key is to ensure that you pierce several spots in the potato to release steam before microwaving. You will only need a chef's knife and microwave for this easy recipe!

There will only be 1 serving, but you can easily duplicate to make enough for the whole family!

  1. Prep. To prepare your 1 medium sweet potato, make sure to wash it and dry it thoroughly. Then, use a fork to pierce several places on the potato.
  2. Microwave. Place your sweet potato on a paper towel-lined plate and put it in the microwave. Heat it on high for 3 minutes, then rotate it to the other side and heat for another 2 minutes (*see note).
  3. Rest. Carefully remove the sweet potato from the microwave (it will be hot!) Allow it to rest for 2 minutes.
  4. Slice and serve with butter. Slice down the middle and serve with a pat of butter, if desired.

Sweet potatoes can be a delicious light lunch or a great snack on their own. If you are looking for a balanced meal to make for the family, try serving microwave sweet potatoes with pan-seared salmon, and roasted vegetable medley! Enjoy!

💭 Angela's Tips & Recipe Notes

  • Large sweet potatoes will take longer to cook until tender, add cooking time in 1-minute increments until the sweet potato softens.
  • You'll know your sweet potato is ready when you can easily pierce it with a fork!
  • You can add any of your favorite toppings to your sweet potato (or just enjoy it plain!) For a savory sweet potato, I enjoy adding salt, pepper, and butter. For a sweeter side, I like to add brown sugar, cinnamon, and honey butter!

🥡 Storing & Reheating

If you have any, place your leftovers in a sealed container in the fridge for 3-4 days.

Reheating Microwave Sweet Potatoes

Heat your leftover sweet potatoes on medium power in the microwave, you can also make your leftovers into some tasty mashed sweet potatoes!

❓ Recipe FAQs

Do I Need To Peel My Sweet Potatoes?

No! The skin keeps the sweet potato moist when cooking, it is also edible and has some of the potato's nutrients.

Why Do You Pierce Potato Skin With A Fork Before Cooking?

When you pierce a potato skin, it allows steam to release and will stop them from exploding!

What Do You Eat With Sweet Potatoes?

Pork, chicken, beef, fish, turkey, and vegetables all pair well with sweet potatoes! Sweet potatoes would be delicious with Traeger smoked turkey, glazed honey ham, or blackened Mahi Mahi.
