🔪 How To Make A Mexican Torta

This traditional sandwich is super easy to make and has minimal prep work! Just grab a knife and a cutting board and then you are ready to go!

This will make 2 sandwiches, but you can adjust the ingredients to make more (or less)!

  1. Cut. First slice your 1 pound of prepared carne asada into strips or sandwich-size chunks.
  2. Spread. Open up your 2 telera rolls and schmear 1 mashed avocado on the inside of both the top and bottom bun.
  3. Add beans. If using ¼ cup of refried beans, spread it across the top bun alongside the avocado.
  4. Stack the toppings. Next, stack the bottom bun with the carne asada, 1 thinly sliced tomato, ⅛ sliced red onion, 1 cup of shredded iceberg lettuce, ¼ cup of cotija cheese, 12 slices of pickled jalapenos, and 4 dashes of hot sauce, if using.
  5. Top with the bun. Press the top bun over the toppings and then serve immediately.

This quick and easy lunch deserves some simple and yummy side dishes! Serve it alongside some Instant Pot cilantro lime rice for a complete meal! Enjoy!

💭 Angela's Pro Tips & Recipe Notes

  • If you don't have cotija cheese, you can also use crumbled feta or Parmesan cheese.
  • For some added heat, use a couple of dashes of your favorite brand of hot sauce!
  • To store: Leftovers can be stored in the fridge for a day or so. However, the bread can easily become soggy so I recommend eating them as soon as they are made.

Instructions

  • To begin, cut your carne asada into strips or sandwich-size pieces.
  • Open your telero rolls and spread mashed avocado on the inside of both the top and bottom bun.
  • If using refried beans, spread it across the top bun with the mashed avocado.
  • Then, stack the bottom bun with the carne asada, tomatoes, red onions, shredded iceberg lettuce, cotija cheese, pickled jalapenos, and hot sauce, if using.
  • Gently press the top and bottom buns together, forming a sandwich. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • If you don't have cotija cheese, you can also use crumbled feta or Parmesan cheese.
  • For some added heat, use a couple of dashes of hot sauce!
  • To store: If you have any leftovers, store them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to one day. However, the lettuce and tomatoes could make the bread soggy, so I recommend enjoying it immediately after making it.
