I am so happy to have a go-to version that my Caesar salad fans love as much as I do. I didn't think I would ever find a taste equivalent without the anchovies.
After all, the flavor of anchovies is a hallmark part of the pungent, garlicky perfection of this dressing. Plus, there are no raw eggs or super salty anchovies in a can to deal with at all.
If you have been avoiding Caesar salad dressing as I did, give this version a try. It's quick and uses household staple ingredients (mayo, Dijon, Parmesan, Worcestershire, lemon, salt & pepper). All that great flavor without the anchovy.
🥘 Ingredients
Just a few pantry staples and you can make this amazingly quick and tasty dressing. You could easily already have all of these items at home, too.
- Mayonnaise - 1 cup of mayonnaise.
- Lemon - 1 large lemon, zested and juiced.
- Parmesan Cheese - 3 tablespoons of Parmesan cheese.
- Dijon Mustard - 2 tablespoons of coarse ground Dijon mustard (or try a Dijon mustard substitute).
- Worcestershire Sauce - 2 teaspoons of Worcestershire sauce. If you need to avoid all anchovies, then check out my list of Worcestershire substitutes. I recommend using soy sauce (or soy sauce mixed with ketchup) or miso paste as simple, fish-free alternatives.
- Salt & Pepper - ⅛ teaspoon of freshly ground salt and pepper, to taste.
Fish Allergies: If you share this dressing with someone with a fish allergy, please note the additional substitute options above, as Worcestershire sauce has anchovies as an ingredient. *My guide to Worcestershire sauce substitutes has additional alternatives that can be used to work around a fish allergy.

🔪 How To Make Caesar Salad Dressing Without Anchovies
A few minutes in a food processor is all it takes. A quick blitz of your ingredients, and you'll be enjoying this tasty Caesar salad dressing. All you need is your measuring utensils and a food processor to begin.
This recipe will make enough dressing for 6 servings at ¼ cup each.
- Mix until smooth. Combine all ingredients (1 cup (224 grams) of mayonnaise, juice from a large lemon + the zest from half, 3 tablespoons (44 grams) of Parmesan cheese, 2 tablespoons (30 grams) of coarse ground Dijon mustard, 2 teaspoons (10 milliliters) of Worcestershire sauce, and ⅛ teaspoon (0.6 grams) of freshly ground salt and pepper) in a food processor and blitz or pulse until creamy.
- Toss and serve. Grab a large bowl and plenty of greens, then dollop a generous portion of the dressing over your salad. Toss until well coated and serve.
💭 Angela's Pro Tips & Notes
- Additional anchovy substitutes include capers and flavorful brined olives such as kalamata or Castelvetrano.
- If desired, you can let your Caesar dressing chill in the fridge for 30 minutes to let the flavors meld together before serving.
- Use fresh lemon, freshly grated Parmesan cheese, and freshly ground salt and pepper for the best flavor.

🥡 Storing
Your homemade Caesar salad dressing without anchovies can be stored in an airtight container and refrigerated for up to one week. However, I prefer to use my dressing within the first few days and by day 3 at a maximum for the best flavor.
❓ Recipe FAQs
While it will not have the exact same flavor, it will be incredibly close! This is because Worcestershire sauce is used as an anchovy substitute to add the savory, salty, umami flavor that is typically achieved by anchovies.
Yes, to make this dressing vegan, use vegan mayonnaise, a vegan substitute for Worcestershire sauce (which typically contains anchovies), and vegan Parmesan cheese.
If you need to avoid anchovies, you can use soy sauce or a mix of soy sauce and ketchup, or miso paste as fish-free alternatives to Worcestershire sauce. (see my post on Worcestershire sauce substitute)
While a food processor is recommended for easy emulsification, you can also use a high-speed blender or an immersion blender if you don't have a food processor.

This is by far the best Caesar dressing you can make without anchovies. It uses everything I already have in my cupboard and refrigerator. Double the recipe when making a salad for a party— you won’t be disappointed!!

I was searching for a Caesar dressing recipe that used worsteshire rather than anchovy paste as I DO have an anaphylaxic reaction to fish and shellfish and yet I have been able to eat the worsteshire. I believe it is because, in our house, we use such small amounts of worsteshire in anything. I LOVE grilled chicken Caesar. Just a thought for someone with a more minor fish allergy.

It is indeed! There is usually some form of anchovies in the sauce (which is why it works great for making this dressing without using canned anchovies). I will update as a bigger reminder for those with allergies tho!! ~ Angela
