🔪 How To Make Christmas Crack
This recipe involves making toffee and melting chocolate, which are both easy to do! You will need a baking sheet, a saucepan, and a rubber spatula!
Nutritional value is based on 12 servings, but the pieces won't exactly break apart into even sections.
- Preheat. To start, preheat your oven to 400°F (205°C) and line a baking sheet with aluminum foil or parchment paper.
- Arrange the crackers. Butter the aluminum foil or parchment paper and place the 4 ounces of saltine crackers, salt side up, in rows until the entire surface of the baking sheet is covered.
- Boil. Combine 1 cup each of both butter and sugar in a saucepan and bring to a rolling boil at medium-high heat.
- Pour. Allow the sugar and butter to boil for 3 minutes, stirring frequently, then pour directly over the saltine crackers on the baking sheet.
- Spread. Use a spatula or spoon to cover the saltines evenly with the sugar mixture, pushing the caramelized layer all the way to the baking sheet edges.
- Bake. Bake at 400°F (205°C) for about 6 minutes or until the toffee starts bubbling, then remove from the oven and sprinkle 11.5 ounces of chocolate chips over the caramel layer.
- Melt chocolate. Let the chocolate chips melt, about 5 minutes, then using a spatula spread the chocolate layer making sure to cover the caramel layer completely and to push the chocolate all the way out the edges of the baking sheet.
- Top with almonds. Sprinkle 1 cup of sliced almonds or Christmas sprinkles onto the chocolate and gently press them into the chocolate layer.
- Set. Allow to cool at room temperature completely, then transfer to the refrigerator for 30 minutes before breaking apart your toffee.
This tasty Christmas dessert is perfect for the entire holiday season! You can't go wrong with these! Enjoy!
💭 Angela's Pro Tips & Notes
- Feel free to swap out the milk chocolate for any other kind of chocolate! Try out some semi-sweet or dark chocolate!
- This recipe is super customizable! You can add on a white chocolate or peanut butter drizzle or even swap out the saltines for Graham crackers or Ritz!
- Keep an eye on your toffee as it cooks. You want it to boil for a full 3 minutes, but not any longer as it could burn.
🥡 Storing
Your Christmas crack toffee bars keep well when stored in an airtight container at room temperature, but will do much better if also refrigerated! On the counter, they will last for 1 week whereas in the fridge, they can stay fresh for up to 2 weeks.

❓ Recipe FAQs
A common issue with Christmas crack is the chocolate layer separating from the toffee layer. Sprinkling the chocolate chips onto the hot toffee is a good way of ensuring they stick (rather than melting the chocolate separately).
If you didn't cook the toffee layer for long enough (in order to get it to the point of becoming hard), it will set with a chewy consistency. Make sure to keep it in the oven until the toffee starts to bubble.
Nope, this cracker candy does not have to be refrigerated and can be stored at room temperature. However, I do prefer to keep mine in the fridge as it stays fresh longer. If you have a relatively warm kitchen, it may cause your Christmas crack to become soft at room temperature.
