🔪 How To Make Chocolate Icing
There are two different methods to choose from for melting your chocolate, either in the microwave or using a double boiler. Make sure you have a heat-safe bowl, a saucepan, and a silicone spatula.
This recipe will make enough icing for a dozen doughnuts!
Microwave Method
- Add ingredients to a bowl. Add both your 1 cup of chocolate chips and 1 teaspoon of coconut oil into a microwave-safe bowl.
- Heat. Microwave on medium-power in 20-30 second increments, making sure to stir in between each heating (*see note).
Double Boiler Method
- Add ingredients. Add the 1 cup of chocolate chips and 1 teaspoon of coconut oil into a heat-safe bowl.
- Add water to the pan. In a saucepan, add about 1 inch of water and place the bowl containing the chocolate chips and oil over top.
- Heat and stir. Simmer the water, stirring the chocolate constantly while it melts.
- Remove from heat. Once the chocolate is almost completely melted (tiny pieces are still remaining), remove the bowl from the heat and continue to stir until smooth.
Chocolate Dipping Donuts
- Dip donuts. Dip your baked and cooled doughnuts top side down into the icing. Then, lift the donut away, allowing the excess icing to fall off.
- Let set. Turn the donuts upright and place them onto a wire rack so that the icing can set (*see note).

💭 Angela's Pro Tips & Notes
- You can use your microwave on high power, but medium power is preferred to help prevent burning your chocolate.
- Place a piece of parchment paper or wax paper underneath the wire rack to catch any icing that continues to drip from the donuts while they set.
- To store: Place any leftover icing into an airtight container. Leave it at room temperature for up to 4 days. Lay a piece of plastic wrap atop the icing (touching) inside of the container to prevent a skin from forming.
❓ Should You Glaze Donuts Hot Or Cold?
For this recipe, it is best to let your donuts cool off so that they don't melt the chocolate icing. Once you set them on the rack, the icing will set and harden.
❓ How Do You Get Sprinkles To Stick To Donuts?
The icing on the doughnuts acts as a perfect kind of glue for the sprinkles. After you dip your donuts and let the excess icing fall off, place them onto a wire rack. Immediately add your sprinkles before the icing can fully set.
❓ What Do Donuts Go Well With?
Coffee is a common beverage to serve with donuts because the bitterness balances out the sweetness in the doughnuts. However, they pair well with a variety of foods, whether sweet or savory.
You can enjoy your chocolate donuts with yogurt, eggs, fruit salad, bacon, sausage, or ham!

what kind of coconut oil do you use. Not sure there is so many kinds.
Angela @ BakeItWithLove.com says
I use organic unfiltered coconut oil (that I have to heat and melt to use). Any coconut oil should do just fine in the recipe. Thanks for asking!
