🥘 Chipotle Seasoning Ingredients

I typically keep my kitchen stocked with these herbs and spices, so you may have some on hand already! You should be able to find dried chipotle peppers at your grocery store, but if not, you can use chili powder instead.

  • Ground Chipotle Chili Pepper - 1 tablespoon of ground chipotle chili pepper or any chili powder.
  • Cayenne Pepper - 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper to give it some heat.
  • Dried Oregano - 1 teaspoon of dried oregano or a dried oregano substitute.
  • Dried Thyme - 1 teaspoon of dried thyme, a dried thyme substitute, or ¼ teaspoon of ground thyme.
  • Ground Cumin - 1 teaspoon of ground cumin.
  • Garlic Powder - 1 teaspoon of garlic powder.
  • Onion Powder - 1 teaspoon of onion powder or an onion powder substitute.

🔪 How To Make Chipotle Seasoning

Making your own chipotle seasoning is as simple as mixing herbs and spices! You'll need measuring spoons, a small mixing bowl, and an airtight storage container or spice jar.

One batch makes 3 tablespoons of seasoning.

  1. Measure the ingredients. Measure out 1 tablespoon (8 grams) of ground chipotle chili pepper, 1 teaspoon (2 grams) of cayenne pepper, 1 teaspoon (1 gram) of dried oregano, 1 teaspoon (1 gram) dried thyme, 1 teaspoon (2.5 grams) of ground cumin, 1 teaspoon (1.5 grams) of garlic powder, and 1 teaspoon (1.5 grams) onion powder.
  2. Stir to combine. Add all of the herbs and spices to a small mixing bowl and stir to combine.
  3. Use or store. Use it right away to season your favorite recipes, or store it in an airtight container or spice jar for later.

💭 Angela's Pro Tips & Recipe Notes

  • This recipe yields 3 tablespoons of seasoning. The usual serving is 2-3 teaspoons of seasoning in a recipe.
  • For a milder flavor, you can use less chipotle powder. To make it spicier, increase the chipotle powder and/or cayenne pepper.
  • For a smokier flavor, try adding a teaspoon of smoked paprika!

🥡 Storing

Keep your seasoning in an airtight container somewhere cool and dark, like a cabinet or pantry. Use it within 6 months for the best flavor.

❓ Recipe FAQs

Is Chipotle Seasoning Spicy?

Chipotle seasoning does have a kick to it. You can make it spicier or less spicy by adjusting how much chipotle powder and cayenne pepper you use.

Can I Use Chipotle Seasoning In Place Of Chipotle Peppers?

This may work in some recipes, but not all. If the peppers are a key part of the dish, this seasoning won't be a great substitute for their moisture or texture. If you're just looking to add some chipotle flavor, this seasoning will work great!

How Long Will Chipotle Seasoning Last?

When stored properly in a sealed container, chipotle seasoning can last 1-2 years! For the best flavor, I recommend using it within 6 months. However, it's safe to eat for much longer.
