🌎 Origin

The origin of the margarita is strongly up for debate as many different individuals claim to have created it. One story says that a restaurant owner in Mexico created the drink by combining ingredients typically used for a tequila shot.

A different tale states that the creator must have been an Irish bartender that picked up the wrong bottle of alcohol when making a Daisy (which typically uses brandy) and made a margarita instead.

It seems that the actual history of the margarita will always be pure speculation. No matter how it came to be, it is one deliciously popular drink!

🍹 Ingredients

  • Tequila – 1.5 ounces of tequila.
  • Blue Curacao – 1 ounce of blue curacao.
  • Lime Juice – 1 ounce of lime juice (the juice from 1 fresh lime).
  • Sweet and Sour Mix (optional) – 1 dash of sweet and sour mix (also called ‘sours’).
  • Sea Salt (optional) – For the rim.

*Be sure to see the recipe card below for ingredients, amounts, & instructions!*

🍸 Instructions

Whether or not you want to salt the rim is completely up to you! For this vibrant blue margarita, you’re going to need a margarita glass, a cocktail shaker, and a home bar kit.

  1. Fill and shake. To begin, fill a cocktail shaker with ice and then add 1.5 ounces of tequila, 1 ounce of blue curacao, and 1 ounce of lime juice. Shake vigorously. Taste the margarita and add the optional dash of the sweet and sour mix if needed.
  2. Salt the rim. If desired, rub some lime juice around the rim of a margarita glass and press it into sea salt to salt the rim.
  3. Strain. Fill the margarita glass with fresh ice. Then shake the shaker once more and strain the margarita into the prepared glass.
  4. Garnish. If desired, garnish with a lime wheel and enjoy while cold.

🥂 Cocktail Tips & Variations

  • An orange wedge would also make a fabulous garnish for this margarita because it complements the citrus flavor of the blue curacao!

    • 2 cups blue curacao
    • 3 cups tequila
    • 2 cups lime juice
    • sweet and sour mix to taste

❓ What Does Blue Curacao Taste Like?

Although it is blue, blue curacao has a sweet, orange flavor with a slightly bitter finish. It is commonly compared to Triple Sec.

❓ Is There Alcohol In Blue Curacao?

Yes, blue curacao does contain alcohol. The exact amount depends on what brand you buy, but it generally ranges from 20-25%.

❓ What Is A Blue Margarita Made Of?

A blue margarita is the same as a traditional margarita but replaces the triple sec with blue curacao (which gives it its vibrant blue color!) A blue margarita is made of tequila, lime juice, blue curacao, and some sweet and sour mix if needed.
