A BLT sandwich makes a great quick lunch or easy dinner, plus you can always split them in half and serve them with soup or salad. The combination of crisp lettuce and juicy tomato with salty bacon and creamy mayonnaise is a classic that will never go out of style. The BLT is proof that sometimes the simplest recipes are the best.
A side of homemade potato chips is the perfect pairing. You could also serve with french fries, potato soup, or fruit salad.
Classic B.L.T. Sandwich
Are you looking for a classic, delicious, and easy-to-make sandwich? Look no further than the BLT! This timeless sandwich perfectly combines crispy bacon, juicy tomatoes, and crunchy lettuce, all topped with a smear of mayonnaise on toasted bread.
This is the base recipe for a traditional BLT. Some people also like to add extra ingredients to their BLT sandwiches, such as avocado, cheese, or a fried egg. The possibilities are endless.
🥘 Ingredients
The key to a good BLT sandwich is using high-quality ingredients. The bacon should be cooked until crispy, and the lettuce and tomato should be fresh and flavorful.
- Bacon - 6 strips of bacon. I like to use thick-cut. Cooked and extra crispy.
- White Bread - Thick-sliced white bread is best; you could even use Texas toast! Of course, you can also opt for your preferred variety of sliced bread. For a low carb variation try with my 3 ingredient keto flatbread.
- Iceberg Lettuce - 2 leaves of iceberg lettuce, fresh and crisp.
- Tomato - 1 large tomato, sliced. You may not need all of the slices.
- Mayonnaise - 1 tablespoon of mayonnaise. Use a great quality mayo like Hellman's (or Best Foods on the west coast) or Duke's.
- Salt & Pepper (optional) - Salt and ground black pepper to taste for seasoning the tomatoes.

🔪 How To Make A BLT Sandwich
Making a BLT sandwich is about as easy as it gets; the hardest part is cooking the bacon! Grab a frying pan, some tongs (if you haven't already cooked the bacon), and a knife to get started.
This recipe is for 1 hearty BLT sandwich, but you can easily scale up the ingredients to make more as needed!
- Cook the bacon. If you haven't already, quickly cook 6 strips of bacon in a frying pan or heavy-bottomed skillet for 5-7 minutes or until crispy, flipping halfway through. When done, transfer them to a paper towel-lined plate.
- Add mayonnaise. Spread ½ a tablespoon of mayonnaise on one side of each slice of bread (q tablespoon total).
- Assemble. Place 2 leaves of iceberg lettuce on one of the slices of bread, followed by a few slices of tomato. If desired, season the tomatoes with salt & pepper to taste.
- Close. Place the crispy bacon on top of the tomatoes, then put the other slice of bread on top, mayo-side-down.
- Slice and serve. Slice the sandwich in half diagonally or serve whole.
💭 Tips & Notes
- Use thick-cut bacon for a heartier and more flavorful sandwich.
- Choose ripe and juicy tomatoes to add flavor and texture to the sandwich.
- Use high-quality bread, such as sourdough or whole wheat, to complement the other ingredients and add flavor and texture.
- For an even more indulgent sandwich, add some sliced avocado or a fried egg on top of the bacon.
- To avoid a soggy sandwich, add the lettuce and tomato slices right before serving.
- If you're short on time, you can cook the bacon in the microwave or try air fryer bacon to save time and reduce the needed oil.
- For a lighter version of the sandwich, you can substitute the mayonnaise with mashed avocado or hummus.

🥡 Storing
BLTs are best fresh, but you can still refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container or sandwich bag for up to 24 hours. The sliced tomatoes tend to make the sandwich soggy over time.
❓ Recipe FAQs
If you don't already know, BLT stands for 'bacon', 'lettuce', and 'tomato'- the 3 key ingredients in a BLT sandwich! Of course, you'll also need bread and a little mayonnaise.
Your sandwich, your rules! You can definitely swap the bacon out for turkey bacon or even vegan bacon strips if you don't eat bacon.
It's best to make a BLT sandwich right before serving to ensure that the bread stays fresh and the ingredients don't become soggy. However, you can prepare the ingredients ahead of time and assemble the sandwich just before eating. If you're packing a lunch for work or school, put the tomatoes on the side and add them when you're ready to eat.
