🔪 How To Make A Big Mac
These tasty Big Mac burgers are just as easy to make as any other burger you've made before! You will need a cast iron skillet, a large mixing bowl, kitchen tongs, or a silicone spatula for this recipe.
1 ½ pounds of ground chuck meat will make 15 1.6-ounce burgers or 10 2.4-ounce burgers! Whichever size of patty you choose, work in batches to not overcrowd your pan.
- Prep. Place your cast iron skillet (or heavy-bottomed pan) on the stove over medium-high heat.
- Mix. In a large mixing bowl, mix together your 1 ½ pounds of ground beef, ½ teaspoon of salt, and ¼ teaspoon of ground black pepper. Form 10 hamburger patties.
- Cook hamburgers. Cook the burger patties for 3 to 4 minutes on each side or until the juices from the meat begin to run clear.
- Toast hamburger buns. Prepare your 7 ½ hamburger buns by spreading 1 tablespoon of softened butter on the cut sides of each bun. Place your buns in the cast iron skillet and toast them until they start to brown.
- Build hamburgers. Start building your burgers with the bottom slice of the bun. Spread the big mac sauce on the bun, add onions, lettuce, a slice of cheese, a hamburger patty, and the middle bun. Spread big mac sauce on the hamburger patty, add onion, lettuce, 2-3 pickle slices, the second hamburger patty, and the top bun.
- Serve. Serve with your favorite burger sides.

💭 Angela's Tips & Recipe Notes
- For the best McDonalds's style onions, re-hydrate 1 tablespoon of dried minced onions in ½ cup of boiling water. Allow to sit for 2-3 minutes then drain and assemble your Big Mac.
- You could replace the dill pickle slices with dill or sweet relish if you'd like.
- Customize this burger with your favorite burger toppings like tomato slices or bacon.
- For that true 'steamed bun' texture you get from the McDonalds' wrapped burgers, heat your burger in the microwave on high power for 10-15 seconds.
- 1 ½ pounds ground chuck = 24 ounces. Big Mac patties are 1.6 ounces each so there should technically be 15 patties made with this portion of beef. (but I like the slightly larger 2.4-ounce patties best).
🥡 Storing & Reheating
Place the burger patties and toppings in separate air-tight containers or Ziploc storage bags in the refrigerator. Enjoy within 4-5 days.
Freeze your cooked burger patties by placing a piece of parchment paper between them so they don't stick together. Store the patties in a freezer-safe storage bag or airtight freezer container for up to 4 months. Thaw the patties in the refrigerator overnight before heating.
Reheating Burgers
Sprinkle some water over the top of a hamburger patty and microwave for 1 minute, or heated through to your liking. To reheat more patties at a time, place them in a baking dish in a single layer and add ¼ cup of water to the bottom.
Cover the top of the baking dish with aluminum foil. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Place the baking dish in the oven and bake for 15 minutes. Your hamburger patties need to reach an internal temperature of 165°F.

It's really up to your preference! You can use fresh minced onions if you prefer. However, to get a true McDonald's style I used a tablespoon of dried minced onions and re-hydrated them in boiling water.
Allow the dried onions to absorb the hot water until the center is no longer hard.
You can serve any of your favorite burger sides! Of course, french fries would be the most popular choice for a true McDonald's meal. My air fryer frozen sweet potato fries, corn fries, Cajun fries, or onion rings would be delicious too!
Yes! If you want to make the burgers ahead of time, you can freeze them by placing a piece of parchment paper between each patty. Then store them in a heavy-duty freezer bag or airtight container for up to 4 months. If you are freezing leftover cooked Big Macs, you'll to take off the toppings before you freeze. Thaw overnight in the fridge before cooking.
