🔪 How To Make Grilled Yellow Squash
This side dish is as easy as it gets! All you’re going to need is your grill, a knife and cutting board, and your grilling utensils!
Once finished, you’ll have 8 servings of perfectly grilled squash!
- Preheat. To get started, preheat your cleaned and oiled grill to medium heat (between 350°F/175°C to 375°F/190°C).
- Prepare squash. Meanwhile, prepare your 4 small squash by cutting each one horizontally into ¼ to ½-inch thick strips.
- Season squash. Next, brush your squash strips with ½ tablespoon of olive oil (*see note) and season them with about ½ teaspoon of garlic salt and ¼ teaspoon of pepper, adjusting both to taste.
- Grill. Grill the yellow squash pieces for 5-10 minutes on each side, depending on your desired level of doneness.
- Serve. Once you are satisfied with the tenderness of your squash, remove them from the grill and serve immediately.
Pair your grilled yellow squash with a grilled main dish like pork steaks or chicken thighs so you don’t have to use any dishes in the kitchen! For even more ideas, check out my favorite grill recipes! Enjoy!
💭 Tips & Notes
- When selecting either straight-neck or crookneck squash, opt for squash that is smaller and was harvested while young (for more flavor). Large squash grills exceptionally well but is not as flavorful.
- You can brush olive oil onto your yellow squash before seasoning, however, I prefer to clean and oil my grill, rather than add oil to my veggies!
- Make sure you have long, thick strips of squash that won't fall through the grates of your grill, but are not too thick that they will take a long time to cook.
- Rotate or turn your squash occasionally to prevent them from burning or sticking to the grill.
- Rather than using oil and seasoning, you can mix the seasoning in a tablespoon or two of melted butter and brush it onto your grilled squash before serving. Yum!
- This recipe would also work for other squash varieties such as zucchini (including black, grey, striped, and yellow zucchini), pattypans, sunburst, zephyr, or any of your favorite summer squash.
🥡 Storing & Reheating
Your grilled yellow squash can be placed into an airtight container and kept in the refrigerator for up to 4 days. I don't typically recommend freezing cooked yellow squash, so only make enough to eat within a few days.
Reheating Grilled Yellow Squash
To reheat your squash, bake it in the oven at 350°F (177°C) until it is heated through. Additionally, you could put it in the air fryer at the same temperature until warmed to your satisfaction!
❓ How Do You Cut Squash For Grilling?
Many recipes have squash cut into round disks, but you don’t want all of your veggies falling in between the grates of your grill. It’s best to cut them into strips that are roughly ¼ to ½ inch thick. If you cut them too thick, it will take them longer to cook.
❓ Should You Peel Yellow Squash Before Grilling?
Summer squashes (like yellow squash) have soft skin so they don’t have to be peeled at all! Just wash them, slice them, and they’re ready for the grill!
❓ What Is The Healthiest Way To Eat Yellow Squash?
Yellow squash is incredibly nutritious. It contains tons of vitamins, as well as fiber, magnesium, potassium, iron, and folate! It can be eaten raw or cooked and is healthy either way.
Roasting, grilling, and frying in the air fryer are all tasty ways to prepare some yellow squash!
