💭 Tips & Notes
- Bread Selection. For the best flavor and texture, use Texas Toast thick-sliced bakery bread without garlic spread. Alternatively, any thick-sliced bread will work well.
- Enhancing the Flavor. Boost the taste of your French toast sticks by using flavored bread like cinnamon raisin. You can also add extra cinnamon, nutmeg, or even maple syrup directly to the egg mixture for a richer flavor.
- Using a Non-Stick Skillet. Cook your French toast sticks in a non-stick skillet to prevent sticking and ensure easy cleanup.
- Freezing for Convenience. French toast sticks are freezer-friendly, making them a perfect quick breakfast option. Consider doubling the recipe and freezing the extra for hassle-free breakfasts throughout the week.
🥡 Storing & Reheating
Place your leftovers in a plastic Ziploc bag or an airtight container and store them in the fridge for up to 2-3 days.
To freeze, allow them to cool to room temperature. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and place them on the sheet, ensuring they do not touch each other. Then, freeze the French toast sticks on the baking sheet for 1-2 hours or until they are completely frozen.
Transfer your frozen sticks to an airtight container or a heavy-duty plastic bag, removing as much air as possible from the container or bag. Write the date on the container or bag, then place them in your freezer. Enjoy within 1-2 months.
Reheating
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C/Gas Mark 5). Place your frozen French toast sticks on a baking sheet with parchment paper and bake them for 8-10 minutes or until they are heated to your liking.
They also can be reheated on a microwave-safe plate in the microwave in 30-second increments until they are warmed through. Note that microwaving French toast sticks may result in a softer texture.
❓ Recipe FAQs
Absolutely! French toast sticks are the perfect breakfast food to make ahead of time because they freeze so well and last up to 2 months when stored properly! Feel free to make a few batches at a time to have a delicious breakfast to reheat quickly in the oven on your busy mornings.
Great question! French toast sticks can become soggy for a few reasons, like if they are overcrowded in the pan, undercooked, or if too much liquid is used. The key is to make sure that there is enough space between each stick when cooking them on the stovetop and in the oven so that each one can cook evenly through. Try using slightly stale bread to help prevent the sticks from becoming soggy, too!
Yes, if you want to substitute the milk, you definitely can! You can either use heavy cream or your favorite plant-based milk such as almond, oat, soy, coconut, or cashew.
