If you're in the mood for a comforting and classic dish, look no further than franks and beans. This hearty and delicious meal is perfect for a quick and easy dinner or as a crowd-pleasing option for a summer barbecue.

Double the batch, and you can bring it along to a potluck. It's so easy to make that you'll be taking it to every event you attend.

🥘 Ingredients

This recipe may not be the most glamorous, but it is definitely tasty. You could easily have these items at home already, but you can find them at any store if you don't.

  • Baked Beans - One 16-ounce can of baked beans.
  • Ketchup - ½ cup of ketchup.
  • Light Brown Sugar - ¼ cup of light brown sugar (or, use a light brown sugar substitute).
  • Apple Cider Vinegar - 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar (or, use one of these substitutes).
  • Worcestershire Sauce - 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce (or, use a Worcestershire sauce substitute).
  • Mustard Powder - 1 teaspoon of mustard powder (or, use a dry mustard powder substitute).
  • Smoked Paprika - ½ teaspoon of smoked paprika.
  • Garlic Powder - ¼ teaspoon of garlic powder.
  • Hot Dogs - 4 hot dogs, sliced into small pieces.

Be sure to see the free printable recipe card below for ingredients, exact amounts & instructions with tips!

🔪 How To Make Franks and Beans

Since the hot dogs are already cooked, you are really just adding flavor and heating everything up. You'll need a large saucepan, your measuring cups, and a wooden spoon to mix it all up.

This recipe makes 4 servings, so it's perfect for a family dinner side dish! However, this recipe can be easily scaled up without any extra effort.

  1. Combine. In a large saucepan, combine 16 ounces of baked beans, ½ cup of ketchup, ¼ cup of brown sugar, 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar, 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, 1 teaspoon of mustard powder, ½ teaspoon of smoked paprika, and ¼ teaspoon of garlic powder. Stir to combine.
  2. Cook. Cook the sauce over medium heat until it starts to simmer, stirring occasionally.
  3. Add hotdogs. Add 4 sliced hot dogs to the saucepan, ensuring they are submerged in the sauce.
  4. Simmer. Reduce the heat to low and cover the saucepan with a lid. Cook the franks and beans for about 10-15 minutes, or until the hot dogs are heated through, and the sauce has thickened.
  5. Serve. Scoop into bowls and serve immediately.

Serve your beans and franks by themselves or over top of some white rice! Everyone will love them no matter how they are served.

💭 Angela's Pro Tips & Recipe Notes

  • You can also serve the franks and beans on top of rice or pasta for a heartier meal.
  • For a fun twist, try making beans and franks and nachos by topping tortilla chips with hot dogs, franks and beans, and shredded cheese. Bake in the oven until the cheese is melted and bubbly, and top with your desired toppings.
  • You can also use Lil' smokies if that's what you prefer.

🥡 Storing & Reheating

You can store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

You can reheat small portions in the microwave or larger portions on the stovetop over medium heat.

This was delicious. I was looking for a stovetop version, its too hot to run the oven here right now.

I did saute 1/4 c onion in butter and subbed bbq sauce for the ketchup but followed recipe otherwise. Its very good, thanks for sharing it. It’s a tasty dish that reminds me of my childhood.
