🥘 Ingredients For Chicken Divan Casserole
This casserole only requires a few common and inexpensive ingredients. I like to keep the ingredients on hand so I can whip it up in a flash as a last-minute meal!
- Cream of Chicken Soup - 1 10.5-ounce can of cream of chicken soup (or use cream of mushroom).
- Chicken Broth - 1 cup of chicken broth or stock.
- Milk - ½ a cup of milk. Whole, skim, or nonfat will work just fine.
- Salt & Pepper - ½ a teaspoon each or more to taste.
- Chicken - 2 cups of cooked chicken diced or shredded. Rotisserie chicken is a great way to save on prep time!
- White Rice - 3 cups of cooked white rice.

- Cheddar Cheese - 1 cup of grated cheddar cheese.
- Panko Breadcrumbs (optional) - ¼ cup of Panko for the topping.

🔪 How To Make Chicken Divan Casserole
Anyone can make this casserole, just combine the ingredients and bake! You will need a mixing bowl, a silicone spatula, and a 1.5/2-quart casserole dish to get started.
One casserole makes about 8 servings. You can refrigerate or freeze leftovers and they are always just as tasty!
- Preheat. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and butter or coat your 1.5 - 2 quart casserole dish with non-stick cooking spray.
- Combine the ingredients. In a large mixing bowl, combine a 10.5-ounce can of cream of chicken (or cream of mushroom) soup with 1 cup of chicken broth and ½ a cup of milk, then add 1 teaspoon each of salt and pepper. Add 2 cups of chicken, 3 cups of cooked rice, and 3 cups of broccoli and stir to combine.
- Top with cheese. Transfer to your prepared baking dish and then top with grated cheddar cheese. *Plus optional ½ cup of panko topping, if desired.
- Cover and bake. Cover and bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25 minutes. Remove the cover and allow to cook the last 10 minutes uncovered. The sauce should be bubbling around the casserole dish edges, and the cheese topping should be lightly browned.
- Cool and serve. Remove from the oven when done and allow to cool for 5 minutes before serving.
You certainly don't have to make any sides to go with your chicken Divan casserole but if you do, some quick sauteed green beans or mashed potatoes would be great! Be sure to check out my other casserole recipes for more easy dinner ideas. Enjoy!
💭 Angela's Pro Tips & Notes
- For an upgrade to your chicken divan casserole flavor, try adding a Knorr chicken bouillon cube to the broth!
- You can add extra cheeses to your casserole if desired, I like to use some Parmigiano as well!
- If you don't have Panko, crushed Ritz crackers also make a wonderfully crunchy topping!
- Your casserole is ready when the sauce is bubbling around the casserole dish edges, and the cheese topping is completely melted and lightly browned.
🥡 Storing & Reheating
Wrap the casserole dish tightly with foil or plastic wrap and refrigerate for up to 4 days.
Freezing Chicken Divan Casserole
You can freeze your casserole baked or unbaked! To freeze unbaked chicken Divan, assemble the casserole with the cooked chicken and wrap it tightly with plastic wrap and then foil. Freeze for up to 6 months.
To freeze baked chicken Divan, let it cool then cover it with both plastic wrap and foil. Freeze for up to 6 months. Thaw frozen casseroles in the fridge overnight before reheating.
Reheating Chicken Divan Casserole
For baked casseroles, single servings can quickly be reheated in the microwave for 1-2 minutes, and they are just as tasty! To reheat a larger portion, put it in a casserole dish (if not in one already) and bake, covered, at 400°F (190°C) for about 10 minutes.
For unbaked casseroles, bake as instructed and add 10-15 minutes to the total bake time to account for a cold casserole.

❓ Recipe FAQs
Chicken Divan got its name from the place it was created: The Divan Parisien Restaurant in the New York City Chatham Hotel. It used to be the restaurant's signature dish and was created somewhere between 1930-1940.
This is a great make-ahead recipe! You can assemble your casserole (the chicken must be cooked!) up to 2 days in advance. Wrap it tightly and refrigerate it until you are ready to bake! Expect to add 10-15 minutes to the total cook time due to the casserole being cold.
The traditional version calls for broccoli, but you can certainly swap it for other vegetables! A few good options would be cauliflower, green beans, corn, or mushrooms.
