Microwave Steamed Carrots Recipe

I love veggies and fork-tender carrots are one of my favorites. I LOVE oven-roasted carrots too, but these steamed carrots are just so darn fast.

With this method, they're super simple to check on and get as perfectly tender as you like them. You truly will have an awesome veggie side dish on the table in like 15 minutes, tops!

🥘 Ingredients

All you need is carrots, butter, and salt & pepper, plus a splash of water, that's it.

  • Carrots - 4 medium carrots, or as many as you like, it doesn't change the cooking time by much.
  • Water - Just a splash, 2 - 3 tablespoons will do it.
  • Butter - 1 tablespoon of butter, or more if needed. You can also glaze your microwave carrots with honey or maple syrup, or a sprinkle of brown sugar, or cinnamon sugar too!
  • Salt & Pepper - Salt & pepper to taste.

Be sure to see the free printable recipe card below for ingredients, exact amounts & instructions with tips!

How to Steam Carrots in the Microwave

Prep your carrots and get them into a dish, then heat and serve, it doesn't get any simpler. Other than a microwave-safe dish, you don't need much (no special microwave gadgets required).

4 carrots make about 2 servings, but you can always make more.

3 step-by-step process photos of microwave carrots.
  1. Prep. Wash or peel 4 (or more) carrots. Chop them into as close to even-in-size rounds as you can get. About ½ an inch in thickness.
  2. Add water. Place your carrot rounds into a microwave-safe dish and add a splash of water. Cover the dish with a lid or plate.
  3. Steam. Cook the carrots on high for 3 minutes, then test the firmness. Continue cooking in one-minute increments until the carrots reach your desired level of tenderness (*see note).
  4. Toss with butter. Once the carrots are nice and tender, remove the dish and leave it covered for about one minute. Drain off the excess water, then add 1 tablespoon of butter and toss to coat the carrots. Season to taste and serve with your favorite main dishes!

Serve them with bag roasted chicken or my crockpot Yankee pot roast. Enjoy!

💭 Angela's Pro Tips & Recipe Notes

  • In place of butter, you can also glaze your microwave carrots with honey or maple syrup, or a sprinkle of brown sugar, or cinnamon sugar too!
  • Be very careful of the steam when opening your dish. I also recommend that your use oven mitts and then remove the dish from your microwave.
  • To Store: Keep leftover steamed carrots in a shallow airtight container or sealable plastic storage bag. Enjoy within 3-5 days and reheat in the microwave.

How Long Do I Microwave Carrots?

Start with 3 minutes, then test them for doneness. Work in 3-minute increments, carefully checking between each one, until you are satisfied!

Can I Microwave Baby Carrots?

If you'd like to use baby carrots instead, that's just fine! They will make smaller rounds when sliced, so they may require less cooking time. The recipe will otherwise remain the same. Be sure to check their tenderness as you go so you can get them just right!
