I'm all about fun Halloween treats as soon as September begins. It gives me two whole months to enjoy all of these festive (and tasty) snacks.

These witch hats are the perfect cooking project for kiddos (to either help you out or do it completely themselves). We had so much fun making them that I know you will, too.

🥘 Ingredients

Image of ingredients with labels.
  • Crescent Rolls - Canned, refrigerated crescent rolls are all you need. Make sure the sheet is perforated so that you can separate them into triangles.
  • Butter - Melt your butter so that you can easily brush it onto the crescent rolls. I like to allow the melted butter to cool slightly before using it on the crescent roll dough.
  • Seasoning - A combination of garlic powder and Italian seasoning (try my homemade Italian seasoning).
  • Parmesan - You can grate your Parmesan yourself or use the store-bought version.
  • Cheddar - You can use whatever kind of cheese you like; I just used white cheddar because I liked the color of the band on the hat the best. The contrast with the olive slice looks great.
  • Olives - Black olive slices to act as the buckle of the hat.

🔪 How To Make Halloween Crescent Roll Witches Hats

These super easy, kid-friendly witch hats can be made by anyone (they are so simple). All you'll need is a baking sheet, a small bowl, measuring spoons, a pastry brush, and a knife.

This recipe will make 8 witch hats. If you want to make more, just grab an extra package of crescent rolls (or two!).

Prepare the Hats

Step 1: Preheat. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C/Gas Mark 5) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.

Step 2: Roll. Unroll 8 ounces (227 grams) of crescent rolls and separate each triangle (photo 1). Roll the wide end of the triangle a couple of times to make the brim of the hat and then slightly round the tips of the hat. Repeat with all of the crescent rolls (photo 2).

Step 3: Brush. In a small bowl, mix 2 tablespoons of melted butter, ½ teaspoon of garlic powder, and ½ teaspoon of Italian seasoning until well combined. Then, brush the mixture on each of the crescent rolls (photo 3) and sprinkle 2 tablespoons of Parmesan cheese on top (photo 4).

Bake & Serve

Step 4: Bake. Bake in the oven at 375°F (190°C/Gas Mark 5) for 8-10 minutes or until the hats are golden brown (photo 5).

Step 5: Cool. Remove the crescent rolls from the oven and allow them to cool completely before decorating them.

Step 6: Decorate. Place thin slices of cheddar cheese onto each hat, followed by one of your 8 black olive slices for the buckle (photo 6). Serve immediately.

💭 Angela's Pro Tips & Recipe Notes

  • Keep an eye on the oven. Since these witch hats are not rolled all the way, they bake faster than typical crescent rolls. Make sure to keep an eye on them so that they don't burn.
  • You need one standard-sized container of crescent rolls. 8 ounces of crescent roll dough is equivalent to one package (which yields 8 crescent rolls). Make sure you buy the standard crescent roll dough and not the sheets that aren't perforated.
  • Make it spicy. If you want a little extra zest, you can add a pinch of crushed red pepper flakes to your garlic butter mixture.

🥄 Make Ahead Options

If you know that you'll be storing these snacks, you can bake the crescent roll dough and assemble later (adding the cheese and olives just before serving).

🥡 Storing

These crescent rolls are best served immediately but can be stored in a sealed container at room temperature for 2-3 days. I don't recommend refrigerating them, as it could cause the crescent rolls to become soggy.

They're a snap to make, which makes them the perfect last-minute appetizer to serve.

❓ Halloween Crescent Roll Witches Hats Recipe FAQs

Can I add anything else to my crescent roll witch hats?

Sure! If you want to go a step past garlic bread, you could add some sliced pepperoni or salami. Simply roll it up in the portion of the crescent roll that makes up the brim of the hat, then finish the recipe as normal.

Can I make mini crescent roll witch hats?

Absolutely. Just use a pizza cutter to evenly slice your crescent roll dough into smaller triangles. Then, you can roll them, bake them, and assemble them like normal. Just be sure to keep an eye on them as they may bake more quickly.

Can I make sweet crescent roll witch hats?

Yes! Instead of brushing your hats with garlic butter, you could brush them with melted butter and then sprinkle some cinnamon sugar over top. You can even add hazelnut spread into the brim of the hat, too. For decorating the band and buckle, you could use frosting, chocolate chips, and/or sprinkles.
