🔪 How To Make Halloween Baked Cheese Mummies
All you need to do to make these is assemble them and then pop them into the oven! You don't have to do any measuring or dough mixing (which is why I love letting the kiddos help!)
All you are going to need is a baking sheet, a small bowl, a pastry brush for your egg wash, a 3-inch cookie cutter, and a pizza cutter.
This recipe will yield 6 baked cheese mummies, but you can easily double it if you like with an extra package of puff pastry!
Step 1: Preheat. Preheat your oven to 400°F (205°C/Gas Mark 6) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Step 2: Make the egg wash. In a small bowl, whisk together 1 large egg (50 grams) and 1 tablespoon (15 milliliters) of water to create your egg wash. Set it aside.
Step 3: Cut out the pastries. Unfold your 2 sheets of thawed puff pastry and use a circular cookie cutter (about 3 inches in diameter) to cut out 12 circles. Save the scraps for later.
Step 4: Layer. On 6 of the pastry circles, place one of your 6 slices of pepperoni followed by one of the 6 mini Babybel cheeses.
Step 5: Assemble. Use a pastry brush to brush your egg wash around the outside of the puff pastry, and then place a second puff pastry round on top. Gently press the edges together.
Step 6: Add strips. Use a pizza cutter to slice thin strips out of your puff pastry scraps. Lay them on top of your assembled pastries to look like mummies.
Step 7: Bake. Brush the tops of the puff pastries with some more eggwash and then bake in the oven at 400°F (205°C/Gas Mark 6) for 20 minutes or until golden in color.
Step 8: Add eyes. Remove the baked mummies from the oven, and then add your 12 mini candy eyes.
Step 9: Serve. Serve immediately while warm with a side of marinara sauce.
🎃 What To Serve With Halloween Baked Cheese Mummies
Serve your mummies with a side of marinara sauce or arrabbiata sauce for a pizza-inspired dip! Don't forget to use some fun Halloween or fall decor as well!
Place them alongside some other Halloween appetizer snacks like Halloween popcorn balls or mummy dogs for a super fun party! Enjoy!
💭 Tips & Notes
- You can add a dollop of marinara sauce on top of your Babybel cheese. Or you can just serve your marinara as a dipping sauce on the side!
- I used white cheddar Babybel cheese, but you can use any of the flavors you like!
- The egg wash not only helps to seal the top and bottom puff pastry together, but it also makes the top a beautiful golden color!
🥄 Make Ahead Options
You can fully assemble your mummies up to a day before needing them. Store them in a sealed container in the refrigerator.
When ready, brush the mummies with your egg wash and bake as directed. Add the eyes, and you are ready to go!
🥡 Storing & Reheating
These mummy pastries are definitely one of those snacks that is best when enjoyed immediately after making them. You want them to be warm with melted cheese!
However, you can store them in a sealed container at room temperature for a couple of days if needed. However, the puff pastry may lose its crispiness and the cheese will harden as it cools.
Reheating Baked Cheese Mummies
Reheat your mummies using small bursts in the microwave in order to re-melt the cheese. Or, you can try reheating them in the air fryer or the oven at 350°F (175°C/Gas Mark 4), but keep an eye on them so that the puff pastry doesn't burn.

❓ Recipe FAQs
While these two items are sold in the same area of the store and may look the same at first glance, they are actually different. Puff pastry is laminated (meaning it is layered with butter and dough), which creates fluffy, flaky layers. On the other hand, phyllo dough is very thin and is made using oil instead of butter.
You should not swap these for one another.
Mini Babybel cheese is the perfect size for these pastries. They have a few different varieties to choose from, too! If you don't want to use these convenient wax-coated rounds, you could simply cut a block of cheese into similarly sized cubes and use them that way! Gouda, brie, or gruyere would all taste amazing!
Sure! These mummies are perfect for Halloween festivities. However, you will want to try to make them as close to the party as possible and either keep them warm during transport or warm them up upon arriving (as the melted cheese makes them extra special!)
