Easy Homemade French Toast Recipe
This French toast recipe is a weekend staple at our home and one of the only ways that our daughter eats eggs (and she doesn't know it!). It is delicious by itself but can easily be customized with all of your favorite toppings.
It's a classic recipe that comes together in just a few minutes, so you can easily enjoy it any day of the week. We also love to slice our bread and make cinnamon french toast sticks for a fun finger food breakfast!
🥘 Ingredients
Classic French toast only needs a few ingredients to make. You can use sandwich bread, but I recommend trying out some challah or brioche!
- Eggs - 7 large eggs.
- Heavy Cream - ½ cup of heavy cream. If you don't have any on hand, you can use whole milk as well.
- Vanilla Extract - 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract.
- Cinnamon - 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon.
- Nutmeg - A pinch of ground nutmeg.
- Butter - ½ tablespoon of butter.
- Bread - A loaf of your preferred variety of bread (I like to use challah or brioche!)

🍞 Best Bread For French Toast
When choosing bread for French toast, you'll want a loaf that is thick-cut. My personal favorite bread varieties are challah, brioche, or French bread. You could also use sourdough, Texas toast, or even whole wheat sandwich bread! Just use whatever you have on hand.
🔪 How To Make French Toast
All you have to do is make your egg mixture, soak the bread, and pan-fry it. Go ahead and grab a baking dish, a frying pan, and a spatula.
This recipe will make about 10 pieces of French toast, but it is super easy to scale up the ingredients and make more if you need to.
- Make egg mixture. To make this classic French toast, whisk together 7 large eggs, ½ cup of heavy cream (or milk), 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, and a pinch of nutmeg in a dish deep enough to soak your bread pieces in. I usually use an 8x8 baking dish or a pie pan for my egg mix.
- Soak the bread. Set your first one or two pieces of bread in the egg mixture (allow the bread to soak in the egg mixture for at least 30 seconds per side) while your large frying pan or skillet is heating to medium.
- Melt butter. Melt ½ tablespoon of butter in your frying pan or skillet, then add the egg-soaked bread pieces.
- Cook. Cook the French toast for approximately 2 minutes per side or until a nice golden brown and the egg coating is cooked through.
- Serve. Serve immediately, topped with butter and confectioners sugar, syrup, or jelly.
Serve your French toast with some roasted berries and a dollop of whipped cream! Drizzle it with some syrup and you're ready to dig in. Enjoy!
💭 Angela's Pro Tips & Notes
- You can buy unsliced bread so that you can cut the slices as thick as you like (I think 1 inch is the perfect thickness for French toast!)
- For perfect French toast, allow your bread slices to dry out on a wire rack overnight (or use stale bread!)
- The ratio of cream to eggs is pretty important, so make sure to measure it out! If you add too much cream (or milk), you could make your toast soggy. On the other hand, not having enough will make it hard for the mixture to be absorbed by the bread!

🥡 Storing & Reheating
You can keep any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Additionally, French toast freezes really well! Simply lay the slices on a baking sheet and place them into the freezer for a few hours. Once frozen, you can transfer the slices to a Ziploc bag. They can be frozen for up to 3 months.
Reheating
You can reheat your French toast straight from being frozen. Simply pop the slices into the toaster, heat them in the air fryer, or warm them in the oven (covered with foil) at 350ºF (175ºC).

❓ Recipe FAQs
You can easily prepare the egg mixture ahead of time if you like. Simply whisk it together and store it in the fridge for a day. Then, when ready, continue with the recipe as written.

The best way to avoid soggy French toast is by using either stale or dried bread. You also want to ensure that you have a good balance between the eggs and heavy cream so that you aren't adding too much liquid. Finally, make sure that you aren't undercooking it!
You'll want to use a nice medium-low heat for French toast. If the heat is too high, the outside will become crisp before the inside has finished cooking, leaving you with soggy toast.
