Ready In Minutes With Your Air Fryer
Texas Toast is a fantastic side for many meals. Growing up, I loved having it with steak. There's something special about that chewy, crispy bread paired with a juicy ribeye – it's a combination I still enjoy!
It's also excellent with pasta dishes. The thick slices are ideal for soaking up delicious sauces, just like they are with any gravy-based meal.
For breakfast, this thick, buttery toast is a treat. It's great for sopping up egg yolk, creating a hearty breakfast sandwich, or accompanying a cheese omelet.
My personal favorite way to enjoy Texas Toast is with soup or stew. It is perfect with my Texas chili. You can have it as simple toast or turn it into a scrumptious grilled cheese sandwich!
🌎 Origin
The story goes that back in the 1940s, a well-known restaurant chain requested a local bakery to make their bread slices thicker. However, when the bread arrived, it was too big for the toaster!
Instead of wasting it, someone came up with the brilliant idea to butter both sides of the bread and grill it. And that's how Texas Toast came into existence!
🥘 Ingredients
This recipe has you using the frozen brand of garlic Texas Toast – even easier!!!! It’s the ONLY ingredient! You will need four slices and can choose from the following kinds of bread:
- Bakery Sliced Texas Toast - You can frequently find the popular garlic bread version of Texas Toast in your bakery. Since it's not frozen, it air fries to perfection FAST!
- Texas Toast Garlic Bread - The frozen variety is branded as 'Texas Toast' or the generic brands; they're all yummy!
- Texas Toast Cheese Bread - This is also frozen and offered by the name brand; I don't usually see a generic offered. 🙁
🔪 How To Make Texas Toast In The Air Fryer
Place whatever kind of bread you choose into the trays or basket of your air fryer, ensuring no overlap. NOTE: You may be able to fit more or fewer than four slices, depending on your air fryer model.
Bakery Sliced Texas Toast (Fresh)
- Preheat: Set your air fryer to 350°F (175°C).
- Cooking: Place the toast in the air fryer and cook for 2-3 minutes.
- Flipping: Turn the bread over and continue cooking for about 2 more minutes, or until it's browned and crispy as you like.
Texas Toast Garlic Bread (Frozen)
- Preheat: Warm up your air fryer to 350°F (175°C).
- Initial Cooking: Cook the garlic bread for 2-3 minutes.
- Flipping and Additional Cooking: Flip the slices and cook for another 3-5 minutes. The toast should be golden and crispy.
Note: If the basket or tray is full, cooking time may increase. Fewer slices may reduce the time needed.
Texas Toast Cheese Bread (Frozen)
- Preheat: Heat the air fryer to 350°F (175°C).
- Cooking Duration: Cook the cheese bread for 6-10 minutes. Watch for the cheese to melt and the bottom to crisp up.
Note: A full basket or tray may require additional cooking time. Cooking just one or two slices might take less time.
💭 Angela's Pro Tips & Notes
- Keep the Toast Frozen: Start with frozen toast directly from the freezer. Thawing it first is not necessary and can affect the texture.
- Skip the Oil: There's no need to add extra oil. The air fryer will crisp the toast perfectly without it.
- Rotate Trays in Convection-Style Air Fryers: If you're using a convection-style air fryer with multiple trays, make sure to switch the trays (top to bottom) halfway through cooking. This ensures even toasting.
- Adjust Cooking Time for Quantity: The more slices of toast you cook at once, the longer the cooking time may be. Avoid overcrowding the tray or basket for the best results.
- Check for Desired Crispiness: Depending on your air fryer model and the number of slices, you might need to adjust the cooking time. Keep an eye on the toast and remove it when it reaches your preferred level of crispiness.
- Preheat for Best Results: For an even crisper texture, preheat your air fryer for a couple of minutes before adding the toast.
