🌎 Origin

Crescent dogs (also called pigs in a blanket) are actually a variation of a sausage roll- a British dish that consists of sausages that have been wrapped in dough and then baked.

This idea of baking meat covered in bread can actually be dated back to Roman times, but the modern-day version of pigs in a blanket is thought to have originated in the United States in the 20th century.

Using canned crescent roll dough to make crescent dogs, however, likely was created after the introduction of store-bought refrigerated crescent roll dough in the 1960s. The exact location is unknown, though.

🥘 Crescent Dogs Ingredients

One of the fantastic things about crescent dogs is that they only use a few ingredients! Of course, don't forget to add any of your favorite toppings and dipping sauces!

Tall image of crescent roll ingredients.
  • Hot Dogs - 8 hotdogs. I recommend using all-beef dogs, but you can use your preferred type.
  • Cheddar Cheese - 2 slices of cheddar or American cheese, cut into strips.
  • Pickles (optional) - 2-3 dill pickles, cut into thin spears.
  • Crescent Rolls - One 8-ounce refrigerated tube of crescent rolls.

🔪 How To Make Crescent Dogs

Crescent roll hot dogs are actually surprisingly simple to make and only take a few minutes to prepare! Just grab your baking sheet, a knife, and a cutting board to get started.

This recipe is for 8 crescent dogs, but you can easily scale it up if you need to!

  1. Preheat. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C/Gas Mark 5) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare. Slit each of your 8 hot dogs (360 grams) down the top center with a sharp knife. Start and stop with ½-1 inch remaining at both ends of the hot dogs.
  3. Assemble. Stuff the sliced 2 slices (34 grams) of cheddar cheese and optional 2-3 dill pickles (130 grams) into the slits.
  4. Wrap the hotdogs. Open the canned 8 ounces (227 grams) of crescent rolls dough and separate the 8 triangles out. Pinch any tears together then place a stuffed hot dog with the cheese side up onto the wider end of each wedge. Roll toward the narrow end, then transfer onto your baking sheet.
  5. Bake. Bake at 375°F (190°C/Gas Mark 5) for 12-15 minutes or until the crescent rolls are a light golden color.
  6. Serve. Remove from the oven and serve after cooling for a minute or two.

🥗 What To Serve With Crescent Dogs

Serve these tasty crescent dogs with any of your favorite sides! Try out some potato salad, baked beans, or coleslaw!

Make sure to include all of your favorite dipping sauces! Some ketchup, mustard, honey BBQ sauce, honey mustard, and ranch dressing are all fantastic options! Enjoy!

💭 Angela's Pro Tips & Recipe Notes

  • Since hot dogs are the star of the show, you'll want to make sure you use your favorite high-quality dogs! I recommend using all-beef hot dogs, but you could even use bratwurst if you prefer!
  • Leave space in between all of your hot dogs on the baking sheet to ensure even cooking.
  • Feel free to brush the top of the crescent rolls with some melted butter (or even add some garlic powder!) before baking for some extra flavor.
  • These hot dogs are perfect for the whole family! Lay out some filling options and toppings and let the kids choose what they like and stuff them themselves! Include a variety of cheeses, pickles, jalapenos, and even onions!

🥡 Storing & Reheating

These crescent roll hot dogs are best enjoyed fresh, but you can easily store them in the fridge for 2-3 days.

Reheating Crescent Dogs

Reheat your crescent dogs on a baking sheet in the oven at 375°F (190°C/Gas Mark 5) until heated through.

❓ Recipe FAQs

Can I Make Crescent Dogs Ahead Of Time?

Sure! This is a fantastic make-ahead meal. You can go ahead and fully assemble your hotdogs and then store them in the fridge for a day before baking them. Alternatively, you can prepare them in advance and freeze them! Just add a few extra minutes of baking time.

What Other Fillings Can I Add To Crescent Roll Hot Dogs?

The possibilities are endless! You can stick with the standard cheese and pickles or add other toppings like jalapenos, sauteed onions, or chili!

Can I Deep Fry Crescent Dogs Instead Of Baking Them?

Sure! However, the crescent roll may come off of the hotdog. When assembling, make sure you pinch together the seams of the crescent roll very tightly. You can also place a toothpick to hold the end securely.
