🔪 How To Make Buffalo Shrimp

This buffalo shrimp is beginner-friendly, yet packed full of flavor! Take out a mixing bowl, a large skillet (or frying pan), and a slotted spoon to begin!

1 pound of buffalo shrimp will make approximately 4 servings, so there's plenty for a quick appetizer or a family dinner with a few sides!

  1. Prep. Rinse and clean shrimp as needed then pat them dry.
  2. Mix. In a mixing bowl, combine the 6 ounces of hot pepper sauce, 2 tablespoons of melted butter, ½ tablespoon of garlic, 1 teaspoon of ground cayenne pepper, and optional 1 pinch of salt & pepper. Set aside.
  3. Heat olive oil. Heat 1 tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil in a large frying pan or skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil begins to shimmer and is just starting to smoke, add the 1 pound of shrimp.
  4. Cook shrimp. Fry for 2-3 minutes until no longer opaque, the shrimp have curled and turned pink in color. Remove from the skillet or frying pan with a slotted spoon and transfer into a bowl to toss with the sauce.
  5. Coat in sauce and serve. Toss the shrimp until well coated with sauce and serve immediately.

💭 Angela's Tips & Recipe Notes

  • 6 ounces is equal to ¾ cup of hot pepper sauce. I like to use Frank’s Original red hot sauce!
  • If you are using frozen shrimp, make sure that they are completely thawed before cooking.
  • In place of the cayenne pepper and a pinch of salt & pepper, you can use a Creole seasoning or Old Bay.
  • You can adjust the intensity of the hot sauce by using less than the amount required if desired.

🥡 Storing & Reheating

Once your buffalo shrimp is completely cooled off, place your leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge. Enjoy within 3-4 days.

If you'd like to freeze your leftover shrimp, store them in a freezer-safe container and freeze them for up to 4 months. Thaw in the fridge overnight before reheating.

Reheating Buffalo Shrimp

Heat the shrimp over medium-low to medium heat on the stovetop with a little bit of butter or olive oil so that they don't overcook. Cook until they are warmed through to your liking or at least 5-7 minutes.

You can serve this buffalo shrimp as a light appetizer with your favorite sliced veggies (like celery and carrots) with ranch or blue cheese dressing! It would also make a great addition to a sandwich made with Southen coleslaw and served alongside some creamy mac and cheese!

Where Did Buffalo Sauce Originate?

Buffalo sauce is named after the city of Buffalo, New York! It was originally made from butter, hot sauce, and cayenne pepper from a family-owned restaurant called the Anchor Bar.
