Crispy Oven Baked Sweet Potato Fries
It's hard not to love sweet potato fries. They're crispy and satisfying yet tender inside and somewhat sweet! By baking these fries to perfection instead of deep-frying them, you can feel less guilty about indulging, and they taste just as great!

How To Cut Sweet Potato Fries
For perfectly crisp and evenly cooked sweet potato fries, I prefer to cut them into matchsticks about 3 inches long and ¼-inch across. Follow along with these steps to quickly and easily turn your sweet potatoes into fries!
- Because potatoes are rounded, you will need to slice off the sides of the potato to give you an even, flat surface.
- Chop off the top and bottom of the potato and peel the rest.
- You should now have what is essentially a block of potato. Slice it in half vertically so you have 2 equal-sized pieces.
- Cut each piece in half vertically once more, and you will have 4 pieces of potato. Cut those 4 pieces in half again for 8 pieces.
- Slice each of these pieces into fries roughly ¼-inch wide. I typically get 3-5 fries per piece.
🔪 How To Make Sweet Potato Fries
Slicing the potatoes is the hardest part of this whole recipe, it's a breeze from there! You're going to need a sharp knife and cutting board, a small mixing bowl, measuring spoons, a baking sheet, and some kitchen tongs.
4 large sweet potatoes make about 6 servings, but you can easily double the recipe and use another baking sheet if needed!
Step 1: Prep. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C/Gas Mark 7) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper. (If you want extra crispy fries, you can bake directly on the baking sheet, *see note).
Step 2: Make your seasoning. Add the seasonings to a small bowl and stir to combine. (¼ teaspoon (1.5 grams) each of salt & pepper, ¼ teaspoon (0.75 grams) of garlic powder, ¼ teaspoon (0.5 grams) of onion powder, and the optional ¼ teaspoon (0.5 grams) of paprika)
Step 3: Drizzle with oil. Slice the peeled 4 large sweet potatoes (1.36 kilograms) into matchsticks if you haven't already, then spread them in a single layer on the prepared baking sheet. Drizzle them with 2 tablespoons (29.57 milliliters) of cooking oil.
Step 4: Season and bake. Sprinkle the seasoning blend over the sweet potatoes while tossing to coat them evenly. Then, put them on the center rack in the oven and bake for 15 minutes at 425°F (220°C/Gas Mark 7).
Step 5: Flip, bake, and serve. At the 15-minute mark, flip the fries over and put them back in the oven to bake for another 10 minutes or until they reach your desired level of crispiness. Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauces.
📖 Variations
Sweet potato fries taste amazing with a variety of different flavors! Some people lean into the sweetness, some balance it with a little heat, and others stick with savory seasonings. You really can't go wrong!
Here are a few of my favorite seasoning blends for sweet potato fries:
- Cinnamon Sugar - A classic! With a drizzle of vanilla icing or some whipped cream, these sweet potato fries almost taste like dessert!
- Spicy - ½ teaspoon of salt, ¼ teaspoon each of cumin and chili powder, and a pinch of ground cayenne pepper. (Add ½ tablespoon of brown sugar to make them sweet and spicy!)
- Rosemary Garlic- 2 teaspoons garlic pepper, ½ teaspoon of salt, ¼ teaspoon pepper, teaspoon garlic powder, 1 tablespoon of fresh rosemary (½ tablespoon of dried).
- Italian - 1 tablespoon garlic powder, 1 tablespoon of Italian seasoning, ¼ teaspoon black pepper to taste.
- Salted Honey - Toss with 2 tablespoons of honey and coarse salt to taste immediately after baking. (Also delicious with hot honey!)
🍽️ What To Serve With Sweet Potato Fries
Sweet potato fries are perfect for dipping, and I have a tasty sweet potato fry dip that I made especially for them! They are also delicious in ranch dressing, honey mustard sauce, Cajun dipping sauce, and even ketchup!
You could also try fish & chips with sweet potato fries (they taste great in tartar sauce), or pair them with a classic BLT sandwich. In fact, sweet potato fries pair well with pork, beef, fish, chicken, and more. Enjoy!
💭 Angela's Pro Tips & Notes
- For super crispy sweet potato fries, soak your matchsticks in ice water for 30 minutes, then pat them dry. Add them to a mixing bowl or Ziploc bag with 2 teaspoons of cornstarch and toss to coat. Bake directly on the baking sheet as instructed.
- To make these in the air fryer, cook them in an even layer at 380°F (195°C) for 6 minutes, then flip and cook for another 5-6 minutes. You will need to work in batches, but they crisp up beautifully this way without any extra oil!
- This seasoning blend makes for salty and savory sweet potato fries. You can follow this recipe using cinnamon sugar for a sweeter variation (or see the variations above)!
🥄 Make Ahead Options
You can make these sweet potato fries 1-2 days in advance and keep them in the fridge. When needed, reheat them in the air fryer for fries that taste almost as good as they did hot out of the oven!
Freezing Sweet Potato Fries
Lay your cooked and cooled sweet potato fries on a parchment-lined baking sheet and pop it in the freezer. Let them freeze for 1-2 hours, and then you can transfer them to a Ziploc freezer bag for easy storage. Use within three months. *There's no need to thaw before reheating.
🥡 Storing & Reheating
You can keep your leftover sweet potato fries in a Ziploc bag or airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
Reheating Sweet Potato Fries
Reheat your sweet potato fries in the oven or in an air fryer for the best results. (The microwave will make them soggy!)
In the oven, reheat them on a baking sheet at 425°F (220°C/Gas Mark 7) for 10 minutes and flip halfway through. In the air fryer, reheat them at 350°F (175°C) for 5 minutes, opening and shaking the basket halfway through.

❓ Recipe FAQs
I prefer to peel them, but you certainly don't have to. Like traditional french fries and potatoes, some people like to leave the peel on, and some take it off. It's just a personal preference.
Yep! These sweet potato fries are vegan and vegetarian-friendly as well as gluten-free. Even if you like them extra crispy, you can still follow my note to toss them with cornstarch (cornstarch is a gluten-free grain)!
I love that sweet potato fries freeze so well. What I love even more is that you don't have to thaw them before you reheat them in the oven or air fryer! You can just add a few minutes of extra cooking time.
