Pin image with text of oyster shooters.

My oyster shooters combine clamato, horseradish, and fresh lemon to make a spicy cocktail sauce! This is arguably the best way to enjoy raw, freshly shucked oysters that are always a hit with fresh seafood enthusiasts! You can even add your favorite vodka for an extra kick!

Classic Vodka Oyster Shooter Recipe

These shooters have all of the best components of raw oysters on the half shell in one easy-to-down shot! Each tall shot glass features one freshly shucked oyster topped with zesty tomato, horseradish, and lemon juice (plus vodka if you so choose)!

I like to serve these oyster shooters on a platter as an elegant and easy party appetizer. They're quick, delicious, and always a talking point!

🥘 Ingredients

  • Cocktail Sauce - ½ cup of cocktail sauce or clamato juice.
  • Lemon Juice - ¼ cup of lemon juice or a lemon juice substitute.
  • Horseradish - 1-2 teaspoons of horseradish or a horseradish substitute to taste.
  • Black Pepper - Freshly ground black pepper to taste.
  • Vodka (optional) - 1 cup of vodka makes these shooters a fun and flavorful alcoholic beverage for adults!
  • Oysters - 8 large oysters (rinsed and shucked).
  • Lemon - 1 large lemon cut into wedges for garnish.

*Be sure to see the free printable recipe card below for ingredients, exact amounts & instructions with tips!*

🔪 Instructions

Shucking the oysters is the most challenging part; if that's already done, the rest is a snap! You'll need tall shot glasses, measuring utensils, a chilled mixing bowl, and a silicone spatula.

8 oysters are enough for 8 individual shots. You can scale the recipe up using the '2X' and '3X' functions on the recipe card below!

Step 1: Add ½ cup (121 grams) cocktail sauce, ¼ cup (59.15 milliliters) lemon juice, 1-2 teaspoons (5-10 grams) horseradish, freshly ground black pepper to taste, plus the optional 1 cup (236.59 milliliters) vodka (if using) to a chilled bowl and stir to combine.

Step 2: Put one of each of the 8 (11.2 grams) large oysters into a shot glass. *Use a double shot glass or rocks glass if adding the vodka.

Step 3: Divide the cocktail sauce/horseradish mixture between the shooters and garnish each with one large lemon wedge.

Step 4: Serve immediately and enjoy right away.

💭 Angela's Pro Tips & Recipe Notes

  • To save time and the hassle of shucking oysters, get them from your local seafood market, where they will do this for you.
  • In place of a lemon wedge, you can garnish the shooters with a thin slice of celery (the greens attached look great).
  • Many people like to rub the edge of each shot glass with lemon and dip it in Old Bay seasoning for a zesty rim!
  • A few dashes of hot sauce are another fan favorite in oyster shooters!
  • Consuming raw oysters can pose health risks, as they may contain harmful bacteria that can cause foodborne illnesses. To reduce the risk, purchase oysters from a reputable source, store them properly and serve immediately after shucking. Read more here.

❓ Can I Make Oyster Shooters In Advance?

Raw oysters should be consumed as soon as possible, but you can use jarred oysters to save some prep time.

However, you can mix the clamato/cocktail sauce and slice your lemons in advance. The sauce will last a few months, refrigerated in an airtight jar or container!

The lemons can be sliced 2-3 days in advance, any longer, and they tend to dry out.
