Standard Chocolate Chips
Most chocolate chip packages at the grocery store contain 12 ounces of chocolate chips. So when you come across recipes that call for a certain amount of cups of chocolate chips, how many bags should you buy? Let me break it down for you!
To weigh out chocolate chips, I used a kitchen scale to measure exactly one cup. One cup of standard chips weighs 6 ounces, so a 12-ounce bag would have two cups! *It is important to note that this is a dry measurement based on weight, not volume.
Breaking it down further, there are approximately 311 standard individual chocolate chip pieces in one cup. Keep in mind that different brands produce a variance in the number of individual pieces.
Volume | Ounces (oz) | Grams (g) | Number of Chocolate Chips | |
1 cup | 6 | 170 | 311 | |
ยพ cup | 4.2 | 84 | 230 | |
ยฝ cup | 2.8 | 56 | 162 | |
โ cup | 2 | 40 | 106 | |
ยผ cup | 1.5 | 30 | 80 | |
1 tablespoon | 0.4 | 8 | 28 | |
1 teaspoon | 0.1 | 2 | 10 |
Mini Chocolate Chips
If your recipe calls for mini semi-sweet chocolate chips, there are approximately 6 ยฝ mini chocolate chips in 1 standard-size chocolate chip. There are roughly 1816 individual pieces in one cup of mini chocolate chips.
Volume | Ounces (oz) | Grams (g) | Number of Mini Chocolate Chips |
1 cup | 8.5 | 240 | 1816 |
ยพ cup | 6.4 | 180 | 1362 |
ยฝ cup | 4.2 | 120 | 908 |
โ cup | 2.8 | 80 | 602 |
ยผ cup | 2.1 | 60 | 454 |
1 tablespoon | 0.5 | 15 | 135 |
1 teaspoon | 0.2 | 5 | 54 |
Jumbo Chocolate Chips
When using jumbo chocolate chips, 1 ยฝ standard-size chocolate chips are equivalent to 1 jumbo chip. One cup of jumbo chocolate chips contains approximately 186 individual pieces.
Volume | Ounces (oz) | Grams(g) | Number of Jumbo Chocolate Chips |
1 cup | 6 | 170 | 186 |
ยพ cup | 4.5 | 128 | 139 |
ยฝ cup | 3 | 85 | 93 |
โ cup | 2 | 57 | 61 |
ยผ cup | 1.8 | 14.4 | 56 |
1 tablespoon | 0.5 | 14 | 16 |
1 teaspoon | 0.2 | 5.7 | 5 |
Ounces vs Cups
A standard package of chocolate chips is 12 ounces (or 2 cups), however, there are a variety of sizes. Check out this handy table to see how many cups fit in each bag size.
Size Of Bag In Ounces | Number Of Cups | Grams |
6 ounces | 1 cup | 170 |
12 ounces | 2 cups | 340 |
24 ounces | 4 cups | 680 |
36 ounces | 6 cups | 1021 |
60 ounces | 10 cups | 1700 |
72 ounces | 12 cups | 2041 |
Are 8 Ounces Of Chocolate Chips The Same As One Cup?
One cup of chocolate chips is actually 6 ounces! This may seem confusing since 1 cup is 8 fluid ounces, however dry cups are not the same as fluid. 8 ounces is 1 โ cup of chocolate chips.
Three Ways To Measure Chocolate Chips
You can measure chocolate chips by weight, volume, or count.
To weigh your chocolate chips, simply use a kitchen scale. It is best practice to use grams when measuring weight on a scale, or you will have to convert ounces using fractions. 1 ounce is approximately equal to 28 grams. This method will give you the most precise measurement over volume and count.
When measuring for volume, measuring cups or measuring spoons are used to calculate the amount of space an ingredient takes up. This method is less accurate than using a scale. Two ingredients may have the same volume, but they will have different weights.
Lastly, you can measure chocolate chips by counting each individual piece. Keep in mind the size of chocolate chips vary between each brand of chocolate chips.
๐ฅก Storing
If your chocolate chip bag is open, place it in an airtight storage bag and store it at room temperature for 2-4 months. Ideally, chocolate chips should not be refrigerated as they can absorb odors. Moisture will also cause discoloration on the chips.
You may freeze chocolate chips in a freezer-safe container for up to 18 months.
