If you're looking for a great cremini mushroom substitute then take a look at this list of the best alternatives! You can't swap them out for just any mushroom, you need to choose a variety that is a good match for both flavor and texture. I've got 11 different fantastic choices that you can pick from!

Best Cremini Mushroom Substitute

The best cremini mushroom substitute is one that meets both the texture and flavor of creminis. These mushrooms are also commonly known as baby Bella or Bella mushrooms and they are mildly earthy and firm, with a light to medium brown hue.

Creminis are typically used to make stir fry, omelets, casseroles, soups, burgers, and sandwiches, and sometimes they are simply sauteed or stuffed. There are many possibilities when it comes to using these bite-sized mushrooms, but what if your local grocery store or pantry is void of them?

Below we will give you the very best alternative types of mushrooms and other tasty foods that can be used in your recipe instead!

1. Portobello Mushrooms

Portobello mushrooms are basically creminis that have been allowed to grow until they are larger. They are bigger than creminis and often more savory and meatier, which is great for grilling and baking.

Portobellos can easily be chopped into smaller pieces, similar to a creminis, which means they can be added to any recipe that calls for them.

Use portobello mushrooms in a 1:1 substitution for cremini mushrooms.

2. Oyster Mushrooms

Oyster mushrooms are unique with a mildly sweet flavor and are great in savory dishes such as curries and soups. They are softer than cremini mushrooms which may not hide them in some recipes, especially if added whole.

We recommend cutting oyster mushrooms into bite-size pieces and add them into recipes where they are not the main ingredient.

Use oyster mushrooms in a 1:1 substitution for cremini mushrooms.

3. Shiitake Mushrooms

Shiitake mushrooms have a more subtle flavor than creminis, but their flavor is easily enhanced with spices and fat such as butter or oil. They are spongier than creminis, but are just as tasty when added to your favorite recipes.

Use shiitake mushrooms in a 1:1 substitution for cremini mushrooms.

4. White Button Mushrooms

White button mushrooms are picked early on while they are still light in color and soft. They taste earthy with a milder flavor than creminis.

They are similar in size, often a bit smaller, about the size of a ping pong ball. Button mushrooms can be used in any recipe that calls for cremini recipes such as soups, casseroles, and sauces.

Use white button mushrooms in a 1:1 substitution for cremini mushrooms.

5. Morel Mushrooms

Morel mushrooms are meaty and have a similar texture to creminis. They have a unique nutty flavor that enhances many recipes and are a great alternative.

Additionally, morels are nutritious and delicious and can be used as a main course or added to any recipe that calls for cremini mushrooms.

Use morel mushrooms in a 1:1 substitution for cremini mushrooms.

6. Canned Mushrooms

If you can't find fresh mushrooms, you can always try canned or jarred varieties. These mushrooms will be in a brine that will make them saltier than a fresh cremini mushroom, if you opt for canned mushrooms be sure to rinse and dry them before adding them to your dish.

Use canned mushrooms in a 1:1 substitution for cremini mushrooms.

7. Tofu

Tofu is a great cremini alternative for people who love the added texture but don't love mushrooms or who are allergic. In fact, it is made from soybeans and is often used in meat or mushroom dishes as a replacement.

More specifically, tofu has a very mild flavor and can be seasoned any way that you would season your cremini mushrooms.

Use tofu in a 1:1 substitution for cremini mushrooms.

8. Coconut

The fleshy inner meat of a coconut is healthy, delicious, and similar in texture to cremini mushrooms. It is mildly nutty and subtly sweet with many nutrients.

Without a doubt, you can easily add coconut meat as a cremini mushroom substitute to soups, curries, casseroles, or stir fry. In fact, if you really feel daring, you can easily use the whole coconut and add the water to your dish as well!

Use coconut in a 1:1 substitution for cremini mushrooms.

9. Cauliflower

Cauliflower is a very hearty vegetable that is a great cremini substitute. It can be cut into large 'steaks' or small bite-sized pieces as well as seasoned, breaded, and cooked in many ways!

Cauliflower may not completely taste like a cremini mushroom, but it will add texture and fill out a recipe.

Use cauliflower in a 1:1 substitution for cremini mushrooms.

10. Chickpeas

Chickpeas, or as some people called them, garbanzo beans, are a very versatile ingredient. You can use chickpeas as they are easily flavored and soak up spices with ease.

In fact, chickpeas can also be added to your soups, stir fry, curry dishes, and sauces.

Use chickpeas in a 1:1 substitution for cremini mushrooms.

11. Roasted Peanuts

Roasted peanuts are a great cremini alternative. They are nutty and soften when cooked. Peanuts add both flavor and texture to your dish, and they are easily found at most grocery stores.

But, beware that peanut allergies are a growing concern, if you are making a dish for a crowd you may want to opt for a different alternative.

Use roasted peanuts in a 1:1 substitution for cremini mushrooms.

Cremini mushrooms can easily be replaced with various types of mushrooms or other foods. If you have replaced them with any of the above-listed ingredients, I would love for you to tell me about the outcome in the comments below!
