What Is Bulletproof Coffee
Bulletproof coffee is a popular keto beverage that consists of coffee, MCT oil or coconut oil, and ghee or grass-fed butter. It is blended using a blender or milk frother to make it nice and frothy.
🌎 Origin
Bulletproof Coffee was created by a man named Dave Asprey. In 2009, he was traveling in Tibet and got to try a cup of yak butter tea. He found that the high-fat content of the tea kept him energized and satisfied for hours, which was the inspiration for the now-popular bulletproof coffee.
Asprey experimented with different types of coffee, fats, and oils to create a recipe that would give him sustained energy and focus without the crash that often follows caffeine. He found that using high-quality coffee beans, grass-fed butter or ghee, and MCT oil produced the best results.
He shared his recipe for bulletproof coffee on his blog and it rapidly gained popularity among the health communities. The drink became known for its ability to boost energy, enhance mental clarity, and support weight loss and cognitive function.
🥘 Bulletproof Coffee Ingredients
You'll definitely want to use high-quality ingredients for your bulletproof coffee! This will ensure that you have the best possible flavor!
- Coffee - 8-12 ounces of freshly brewed, hot, black coffee. You can use regular or decaf, but make sure it is high-quality.
- MCT Oil - 1-2 teaspoons of MCT oil, to taste. You can find this at pretty much any grocery store in the health supplements section.
- Grass-fed Butter - 1-2 tablespoons of unsalted grass-fed butter or ghee, to taste. If following a paleo diet or you need to be dairy-free, you could also use coconut oil. If you want the richest, creamiest flavor, then opt for grass-fed butter.

🔪 How To Make Bulletproof Coffee
Bulletproof coffee is so easy to make that you'll want to drink it all the time! All you need is your measuring utensils, a coffee mug, and either a blender or a milk frother.
This recipe is for 1 serving of coffee, but you can easily double or triple it to serve more people!
- Add. Add 8-12 ounces (227 milliliters) of coffee, 1-2 tablespoons (15 grams) of grass-fed butter, and 1-2 teaspoons (5 milliliters) of MCT oil into your blender.
- Blend. Vent the blender to release steam and blend for 20-30 seconds or until frothy and smooth.
- Serve. Pour into a coffee mug and then serve immediately.
🍴 What To Serve With Bulletproof Coffee
Bulletproof coffee is satisfying enough to be enjoyed completely on its own! However, you can also pair it with some delicious breakfast items such as ham egg cups, avocado egg bake, or a bacon breakfast casserole. Enjoy!
📖 Variations
You can easily customize your bulletproof coffee and still enjoy all of the benefits! Try out some of these tasty alterations below.
- Cold Brew: You can also use cold brew coffee! Just blend it together with the oil and ghee and then serve it over ice.
- Sweetener: If you want to add some sweetness to your coffee, use a sugar-free sweetener to keep it keto.
- Flavor: Feel free to add some extra flavor by experimenting with ingredients such as unsweetened cocoa powder, cinnamon, sugar-free syrup, or vanilla extract. Almond, caramel, hazelnut, and chocolate are fantastic sugar-free syrup options!
- Milk: If desired, you can add some keto milk (such as unsweetened almond milk) to lighten up your coffee.
- Protein: Another tasty addition would be a keto-approved flavored protein powder! Just add a scoop to your coffee and mix like normal.
- Toppings: If you want some extra pizzazz, top off your coffee with some sugar-free whipped cream.
💭 Tips & Notes
- Use a blender to blend the coffee and fats together. This will create a frothy, creamy texture that is characteristic of bulletproof coffee.
- You'll want to use grass-fed butter rather than typical butter. This is because grass-fed cows create butter that is jam-packed with tons of healthy vitamins and fat.
- Start with a small amount of MCT oil and grass-fed butter, and gradually increase the amount as you become more accustomed to the taste and texture.
- When using a blender, hot ingredients can create steam that can cause your blender to splatter all over your kitchen. To avoid this problem, try not to fill your blender more than a third of the way full and make sure you vent it while blending (covering the vent with a paper towel to prevent mess).
- If you don't want to whip out a blender every morning, you can also use a milk frother! Just make sure you use a large enough glass in order to have enough room for expansion.
🥡 Storing
Just like most types of coffee, I don't necessarily recommend storing it. Instead, prepare it fresh each morning for the best flavor!
However, if needed, you can store your bulletproof coffee in the fridge for 3-4 days, but you will need to blend it again before serving it.

❓ Recipe FAQs
MCT oil (or medium-chain triglycerides oil) is created from coconut oil or palm kernel oil. It provides an energy boost and helps to achieve the feeling of being full, which makes it a popular ingredient in diets.
Whether or not bulletproof coffee will break your fast really depends on what type of fast you are doing. A traditional fast (where any calories break the fast) would be broken by this drink. However, if your goal is only to stay in ketosis, then bulletproof coffee will not be a problem.
Not only does the butter help make the coffee extra rich and creamy, but there are some added benefits, too! The fat in the butter actually causes your body to absorb caffeine at a slower pace, resulting in longer-lasting energy!
