Crispy fried potatoes have been a breakfast, brunch, and dinner staple in my household since my kids were little, I only wish we had air fryers back then. The air fryer makes home fries just as crispy as pan frying - but with half the grease and much less cleanup.
While they are a popular breakfast option, home fries are suitable for any meal. They're one of my favorite quick and easy recipes as they truly are the perfect versatile potato side dish.
🥘 Ingredients
- Russet Potatoes - Rinse and scrub the potatoes before slicing to remove excess dirt since we are leaving the peel on. Russet potatoes are starchy and have the best texture for home fries.
- Cooking Oil - A small amount of your preferred cooking oil. I like coconut oil or tallow. Use just enough to lightly coat all of the potatoes.
- Garlic Powder - Garlic powder makes up one-third of this super simple seasoning blend.
- Paprika - I prefer regular paprika for home fries. For an extra smokey flavor, you could try smoked paprika, too.
- Salt - Salt to taste. I don't typically add pepper to these potatoes, but you could add a small amount if you prefer. If you opt for pepper, ground white pepper tastes amazing.

🔪 How To Make Home Fries In The Air Fryer
The potato skins crisp up the most, so I recommend leaving the potatoes unpeeled for the crispiest, most classic home fries. Grab a sharp knife and cutting board, your measuring utensils, and your air fryer to get started.
This recipe makes 4 servings of home fries as written. You can double the recipe as needed as long as you continue to work in batches.
Prep & Season The Potatoes
Step 1: Prep the potatoes. Scrub 1 ½ pounds (680.39 grams) of russet potatoes and cut them into ½-inch chunks, leaving the skin on.
Step 2: Add seasonings. Place the potato chunks into a large bowl and add 1-2 tablespoons of cooking oil, ½ teaspoon of garlic powder, ½ teaspoon of paprika, and ¼ teaspoon of salt to taste.
Step 3: Mix to coat. Mix thoroughly with your hands, ensuring each piece is coated.
Cook In Batches
Step 4: Preheat. Preheat your air fryer to 380℉ (195℃).
Step 5: Arrange. Place your home fries in a single layer, being careful not to crowd them.
Step 6: Air fry. Cook for 12 minutes, shaking the basket often. I recommend shaking the potatoes every 4-5 minutes. Check for doneness. If the fries are not yet crispy, continue to cook until they reach your desired crispness.
Step 7: Keep cooked fries warm. Keep finished fries warm in a low oven while finishing the remaining batch(es). Home fries left in the air fryer will continue cooking and dry out.
Step 8: Quickly reheat. When batches are complete, place all fries into your air fryer basket for 1-2 minutes to reheat, then serve.
🥗🥘🍲 Best Served With
Home fries are ideal for breakfast with scrambled eggs, baked eggs, or even my easy bacon egg casserole. They're also a tasty alternative to traditional french fries that can be enjoyed any time of day, with baked cheeseburgers for instance.

💭 Tips & Notes
- Work in batches. For crispy, evenly-cooked fries you need to work in batches. Spread the fries in a single layer and do your best to keep them from overlapping.
- The first batch takes the longest. Later batches will cook faster than your first batch. Taste a fry from each batch to make sure they are done to your liking.
- Check frequently. All air fryers are different, so check your fries early and often.
- Cook potatoes straight from frozen. For frozen potatoes, simply add 2-4 minutes of baking time.
🥡 Storing & Reheating
Let your fries cool fully, then transfer them to an airtight container in the fridge for 3-4 days. Leftovers are best stored in a single layer in a shallow container.
Freezing
Spread the cooled fries out on a parchment sheet and pop it in the freezer for 2-3 hours. Transfer the frozen fries to a heavy-duty Ziploc bag for easy storage and keep them frozen for up to three months. No need to thaw them before reheating.
Reheating
For the best, crispiest results reheat them in your air fryer in a single layer at 350°F (175°C) for 3-5 minutes. A skillet on the stovetop over medium-high heat works well, too.
