What Are Canned Potatoes
Canned potatoes are exactly what they sound like: potatoes in a can. You can buy them whole, diced, or sliced.
When canned, they are only partially cooked so you will still want to cook them before eating them. They last much longer than fresh potatoes so it is always a good idea to keep a few cans on hand!
Ingredients
Just like with fresh potatoes, you'll want to have a few extra ingredients on hand (mainly seasonings) to add some extra flavor to your dish! Here are some spices and herbs that would taste fantastic, but you can feel free to swap out these spices for some of your favorites!
- Canned Potatoes - One 15-ounce can of whole potatoes.
- Butter - 2 tablespoons of butter. I prefer butter for its rich flavor, but some olive oil would work as well.
- Dill Weed - 1 teaspoon of dill weed.
- Parmesan - 1 teaspoon of Parmesan cheese (grated).
- Garlic Powder - ½ teaspoon of garlic powder.
- Parsley - ½ teaspoon of parsley (dried).
- Onion Powder - ¼ teaspoon of onion powder.
- Pepper - A pinch of ground black pepper, to taste.
- Olive Oil - ½ tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil. This will prevent the butter from burning.
How To Cook Canned Potatoes On The Stovetop
Cooking canned potatoes on the stovetop is quick and simple. You only need a cast iron skillet for this method!
- Drain. Drain and rinse a can of potatoes then pat them dry with a paper towel and cut each potato in half.
- Melt butter. Add ½ tablespoon of olive oil and 2 tablespoons of butter to a cast iron skillet and place it over medium heat to melt it.
- Season potatoes. Once melted, add the potatoes and seasonings (dill weed, garlic powder, dried parsley, onion powder, and pepper). Stir until the potatoes are well coated.
- Cook. Cook for 9-12 minutes, or until the potatoes become tender. Make sure to stir occasionally. *You can add a little more butter if you find the potatoes are becoming too dry.
- Serve. Remove the potatoes from the heat, sprinkle with some Parmesan cheese, and serve immediately.
How To Cook Canned Potatoes In The Oven
Baking your potatoes in the oven takes a little longer than using the stovetop, but it is super easy! You'll need a couple of bowls and a baking sheet for this method.
- Preheat. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with some aluminum foil.
- Melt butter. Drain and rinse a can of potatoes, pat them dry with some paper towels, and then cut them in half. Place 2 tablespoons of butter into a small bowl and melt it using the microwave.
- Season the potatoes. Transfer the potatoes to a large bowl and drizzle the melted butter over top as well as ½ tablespoon of olive oil. Sprinkle in the seasonings (dill, garlic powder, parsley, onion powder, and pepper) and gently stir until well-coated.
- Bake. Evenly spread the coated potatoes over the prepared baking sheet and bake in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for 30-40 minutes, flipping the potatoes halfway through the baking time.
- Serve. Remove the potatoes from the oven and sprinkle with Parmesan cheese, then serve immediately.
How To Cook Canned Potatoes In The Air Fryer
The air fryer is a super speedy way of preparing potatoes from a can. You'll want your air fryer and a bowl ready to go!
- Rinse potatoes. Drain and rinse a can of potatoes, pat them dry, and cut them into quarters.
- Season the potatoes. Place the potatoes into a bowl and coat them with 2 tablespoons of melted butter and ½ tablespoon of olive oil. Sprinkle the seasonings over top and gently stir until they are well-coated.
- Cook. Dump the coated potatoes into the air fryer basket and cook at 370°F (185°C) for 10-12 minutes, stopping to shake the basket every couple of minutes.
- Serve. Remove the potatoes from the air fryer, sprinkle with Parmesan, and serve immediately.
Tips For Cooking Canned Potatoes
- You'll want to rinse your potatoes really well before using them. This will help to remove any excess sodium that they were canned with so they won't be too salty.
- Feel free to try out the seasonings that I used or swap them out for your own preferred blend!
- Canned potatoes are relatively bland by themself. So make sure you add some seasonings!
Storing Canned Potatoes
Unopened canned potatoes have a long shelf life and can be stored in your pantry for anywhere from 2-5 years.
Once opened, you'll need to keep your potatoes stored in the fridge in a sealed container for up to 4 days. I would not recommend freezing them.

Thanks for the tips. I find these the ideal potatoes to add to crockpot curries. Just add the last 15 minutes of cooking.
