Vodka & Blue Curacao Drink
A blue lagoon cocktail contains vodka and blue curacao (a blue-colored liqueur), so it really packs a punch! The lemonade adds in a sweet and citrus finish, making this beverage nice and refreshing!
Blue Curacao is known for making drinks look absolutely stunning with its vibrant, tropical blue coloring. Garnish it with a lemon wheel and maraschino cherry for an extra picture-worthy presentation!
🌎 Origin
The blue lagoon cocktail dates back to the early 60s. It was created by an American bartender named Andy MacElhone (the son of a famous bartender named Harry MacElhone). Around the same time, blue curacao entered the market and became incredibly popular.
The drink was created in Harry’s New York Bar, which is a famous bar to this day that is known for being the spot where multiple classic drinks were invented!

🍸 How To Make A Blue Lagoon Cocktail
This drink is so straightforward that anyone can make it! You’ll need a home bar kit and hurricane glass to get started.
- Add ice. To begin, fill your cocktail shaker halfway with ice.
- Add ingredients. Next, add in 1 ounce of both vodka and blue curacao as well as 4 ounces of lemonade and shake until chilled.
- Strain. Strain the mixture into a hurricane glass filled with fresh ice.
- Garnish. Garnish with a lemon twist (or orange), maraschino cherry, or a fresh sprig of baby basil if desired. Serve with a straw and enjoy while cold.
🥂 Cocktail Tips & Variations
- Mix your blue lagoon cocktail in a blender with some ice for a frosty, frozen version!
- You can choose to use less (or more) blue curacao based on personal preference. Remember that this will affect how vibrant the blue color appears.
- If you want to really highlight the citrus flavors, substitute the lemonade for 1 ounce of fresh lemon juice and 1 ounce of simple syrup!
- To add a fun and fizzy element, add a splash of your favorite lemon-lime soda.
- To make a blue lagoon mocktail (non-alcoholic), omit the vodka and replace the blue curacao with a non-alcoholic blue curacao syrup (but start with adding only a splash as it is much sweeter than the alcoholic version).
