Can I Freeze Fruit Pie
Yes! Fruit pie freezes amazingly well, no matter what kind of fruit filling you have!
At room temperature, your baked fruit pie will only last for about 2 days (or 4 days in the fridge). If you can't finish all of your pie within this timeframe, then using the freezer is a great option!
Baked vs Unbaked Fruit Pies
Both baked and unbaked fruit pies can be frozen. However, one does have an advantage over the other.
If you are preparing this pie with the intention of storing it in the freezer, you should go ahead and freeze your pie before it is baked. This will ensure the flakiest crust and freshest flavor!
Freezing Unbaked Pie
Freezing your unbaked fruit pie is incredibly easy. Just follow these simple steps to keep your pie nice and fresh!
- Prepare. Prepare your fruit pie as directed in your recipe, but stop before placing it into the oven.
- Wrap. Wrap your entire pie tightly in plastic wrap. Make sure there are no gaps for air to get in.
- Wrap some more. Then, wrap your pie in a layer of aluminum foil (this prevents freezer burn).
- Put it in a bag. Place the wrapped pie into a freezer-safe storage bag, squeezing out any excess air.
- Mark it. Use a permanent marker to label the kind of pie as well as the date.
- Freeze. Store in the freezer (be careful not to set anything on top of the pie while it is freezing).
Freezing Baked Pie
Even if your pie has already been baked, it can still be stored in the freezer!
- Cool. Make sure your pie has cooled completely (this could take 2 hours or more).
- Freeze. Place your pie into the freezer to allow it to initially freeze, preferably overnight.
- Wrap. Then, wrap your frozen pie in a layer of plastic wrap, followed by a layer of aluminum foil.
- Put it in a bag. Place the wrapped pie into a freezer-safe storage bag, squeezing out any excess air.
- Mark it. Use a permanent marker to label the kind of pie as well as the date.
- Freeze. Store in the freezer.
How Long Can Fruit Pies Be Frozen
If your pie had already been baked, you can keep it frozen in the freezer for a maximum of 4 months.
If your pie has yet to be baked, it can be frozen for up to 3 months.
How To Bake or Thaw Frozen Pie
One great thing about fruit pies is that they don't always have to be thawed out in order to be reheated!
Baking Frozen Unbaked Fruit Pies
If your pie was frozen before it was baked, there is no need to thaw it out before putting it in the oven!
- Preheat. Preheat your oven to 425° (220°C).
- Bake. Once hot, place your frozen pie into the oven and bake for about 20 minutes.
- Reduce. Reduce the oven temperature to 375°F (190°C).
- Finish baking. Continue to bake for another 40-45 minutes.
Thawing Frozen Baked Fruit Pies
If your pie was already baked before storing it in the freezer, you can thaw it by moving it to the fridge overnight (or up to 24 hours). Remove the layer of aluminum foil and plastic wrap.
You can even reheat your pie if you like! Once thawed, simply pop it in the oven at 350°F (175°C) until the filling is bubbling. If your crust begins to brown, you can loosely place foil over the top.
Tips For Freezing Fruit Pies
- For best results, make your pie in a disposable aluminum pie pan. This helps your pie freeze faster (because it is so thin) so ice crystals won't form on the surface.
- Assuming you are making a pie with a full top crust, avoid cutting the slits in the crust until you take it out of the freezer to bake it.
- You can bake your frozen pie according to your original recipe, just extend the amount of time spent in the oven.

How To Freeze Fruit Pies: Blueberry Pie (+Best Tips & Tricks)
Ingredients
- 1 cup sugar
- 6 tablespoon cornstarch
- 1 large lemon (zested and juiced, or use 2-3 tablespoons lemon juice)
- ½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1 pinch salt
- 6 cups blueberries (fresh or frozen, thawed )
- 1 9" butter pie crust (see recipe, or use store-bought crust)
Instructions
- To begin, preheat your oven to 400°F (205°C) and zest the lemon.
- While the oven has preheats, grab a large mixing bowl and mix together the sugar, cornstarch, lemon zest & juice, cinnamon, and salt. Then gently fold in your blueberries until combined.
- Roll and place half of the crust into your pie plate (reserving the other half to top the pie). Fill the crust with your blueberry mixture and top with the remaining crust. Cut 4 or 5 slits in the pie crust to allow steam to escape OR cut the top half of your crust into 1-inch strips and create a lattice by weaving them across your pie.
- Place your pie on a baking sheet to catch any messy drippings then transfer to the center rack and bake at 400°F (205°C) for 45-55 minutes.
- Your pie is done when the crust is golden and the filling is bubbly. Remove it from the oven then allow to cool at room temperature for 2 hours before serving.
Notes
- If your pie begins to brown too much, you can cover it with foil.
- A lattice cutter may also be used rather than cutting the pie crust into strips.

This was very helpful, thank you! My favorite pies are peach-blueberry and blueberry, which I usually make with frozen fruit. I assume I cannot freeze the pie unless it is made with fresh fruit. Am I right?
Angela @ BakeItWithLove.com says
No, your pies can be frozen with fresh fruit, pre-made pie filling, or whatever you have used. Enjoy!
