Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9X13 baking dish with butter or non-stick cooking spray.
Spread a single layer of Oreo cookies across the bottom of the baking dish (between 20-24 Oreos). Pour the sweetened condensed milk over the top of the cookies evenly. Then use a spatula to spread the Cool Whip across the top of the condensed milk.
Sprinkle your chocolate cake mix in an even layer over the Cool Whip. Use a fork to rake out and break up any lumps.
Cut the butter into 1 tablespoon slices, or smaller, and place them across the top of the cake mix, covering as much surface area as possible. Do not mix.
Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 40-45 minutes. Remove from the oven when done and allow to cool slightly before serving.
Optional Icing Drizzle
In a small mixing bowl add the confectioner's sugar and milk. Add the optional splash of vanilla extract and pinch of salt if desired. Mix until it reaches a drizzle consistency. *You can add more milk in small amounts to thin it out if needed.
Drizzle the optional (super easy) icing over the top of your cake after it is done baking and slightly cooled, or when serving.
Notes
If you prefer less sugar, try using sugar-free Oreos. Evaporated milk may also be used in place of condensed milk, but it will not carmelize as well. Sugar-free Cool Whip and/or cake mix may also be used.
If you are not a fan of chocolate, this is also delicious with golden Oreos and a white or yellow cake mix. Mint chocolate Oreos also make an amazingly tasty dump cake.
Use a large serving spoon to scoop and serve individual portions rather than slicing.
To store: This Oreo dump cake is best eaten fresh but can be covered and kept at room temperature for 1-3 days. It can be refrigerated for longer storage, though it tends to harden at colder temperatures.
To freeze: Portion your dump cake into individual pieces and place them in a freezer-safe container. Defrost in the fridge overnight and enjoy within 3 months.
To reheat: Reheat individual portions in short 30-second intervals in the microwave until warmed to your satisfaction.
