Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Then cut each slice of bread into three even strips.
In a large mixing bowl, use a whisk to combine the eggs, milk, maple syrup (if using), vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg (if using), and salt.
Dip each bread strip into the egg mixture, making sure to coat both sides evenly.
Heat a tablespoon of butter in a large frying pan or skillet over medium-high heat. Once the butter is melted, add the bread strips to the skillet.
Cook the bread strips for 2-3 minutes on each side, or until they are golden brown.
Transfer the cooked French toast sticks to the prepared baking sheet. Bake the French toast sticks at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes, or until they are crispy and heated through.
Serve the French toast sticks warm, with your favorite toppings such as powdered sugar, maple syrup, fresh fruit, or whipped cream.
Notes
Texas Toast thick-sliced bakery bread (without garlic spread) would be ideal or any other thick-sliced bread to achieve the best flavor and texture results!
You can add extra flavor to your French toast sticks by using flavored bread such as cinnamon raisin bread, or adding extra cinnamon or nutmeg to the egg mixture. Also, adding maple syrup to the egg mixture is the trick to making great French toast!
A non-stick skillet will prevent the French toast sticks from sticking to the pan, and make the clean-up process easier.
French toast sticks can be stored in the freezer for later use, making them a convenient and easy breakfast option. Double the recipe and freeze the extra sticks for quick and easy breakfasts during the week.
