Creamy Lobster Salad For Sandwiches and More

Lobster salad is perfect for serving on warm summer days because it's cool, creamy, and refreshing! It's made with a delightfully simple combination of lobster meat, mayonnaise, lemon juice, celery, and chives.

You can use lobster salad to make lobster rolls, serve it as an appetizer with crackers, or enjoy it straight from the bowl! It's the perfect salad for picnics, potlucks, pool parties, and everything in between!

🥘 Ingredients

The list of ingredients needed to make lobster salad is fairly short. Make sure to use fresh celery, chives, and good, high-quality ingredients for the best flavor!

Tall image showing lobster salad ingredients.
  • Lobster Meat - 1 ½ pounds of cooked lobster meat (chopped into ¾-inch pieces).
  • Mayonnaise - ⅓ cup of mayonnaise (good quality mayo like Duke's, Hellman's, or Best Foods).
  • Lemon Juice - 1 tablespoon of lemon juice (freshly squeezed is best).
  • Celery - ¼ cup of finely chopped celery (use the tender inner ribs of celery or celery hearts) or a suitable celery substitute.
  • Chives - 1 tablespoon of chives (finely chopped).
  • Salt & Pepper - ¼ teaspoon each of salt & pepper (use more or less to taste)
  • Hot Sauce (optional) - 1 splash of hot sauce for a little extra flavor.

🔪 How To Make Lobster Salad

To make this lobster salad, you just combine the ingredients and chill! Grab your measuring utensils, a mixing bowl, and a silicone spatula to get started.

This recipe makes 4 heaping servings of lobster salad. It will go even further if served as an appetizer!

  1. Measure out the ingredients. Add 1 ½ pounds (680.39 grams) of cooked lobster meat, ⅓ cup (74.67 grams) of mayonnaise, 1 tablespoon (14.79 milliliters) of lemon juice, ¼ cup (25.25 grams) of celery, 1 tablespoon (3 grams) of chives, ¼ teaspoon (1.5 gram) of both salt & pepper (to taste), and the optional 1 splash of hot sauce to a mixing bowl.
  2. Stir. Gently stir until all of the ingredients are combined.
  3. Chill and serve. You can serve your lobster salad right away, but ideally, you want to chill it for at least 30 minutes (up to 4 hours). Garnish with extra chives if desired.

This is the very same lobster salad I use to make New England lobster rolls! You can also serve it on a bed of lettuce as a traditional salad or as a dip with crackers or crostini! Enjoy!

💭 Angela's Pro Tips & Recipe Notes

  • 1½ pounds of lobster meat is roughly 3 ½ cups.
  • For the best-tasting lobster salad, use fresh, high-quality ingredients. If possible, try to use fresh lobster meat, lemon juice, and a good brand of mayo like Duke's, Hellman's, or Best Foods.
  • To ensure tender and succulent lobster meat, cook a whole lobster in a large pot of boiling water for about 7-9 minutes (for a 1-pound lobster). Adjust the cooking time accordingly for larger lobsters. Be careful not to overcook the lobster, or you will end up with tough, rubbery meat!
  • Let freshly cooked lobster cool before making your lobster salad. This makes it easier to handle, and the salad tastes best cold anyway!
  • Adjust the seasonings to suit your tastes. You can use more or less salt & pepper, and I find a splash of hot sauce (or sprinkle of paprika) adds a lovely little kick. Dill also makes a great addition mixed into the salad or garnish!
  • Lobster salad tastes best when served chilled. After preparing the salad, cover and refrigerate it for at least 30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld together. This also helps the salad hold its shape when served.
  • You can also try using different types of seafood in this salad, such as shrimp, crab, or scallops, for a variation on the traditional lobster salad!

🥡 Storing

Lobster salad should always be kept in an airtight container in the fridge and is best enjoyed within 2 days. I don't recommend freezing it because the mayonnaise will separate.
