    🥘 Baked Cabbage Steaks Ingredients

You can easily pick up these ingredients at your local grocery store. When choosing cabbages, look for blemish-free ones that have a nice luster to the leaves.

Tall image of ingredients for baked cabbage steak.
    • Cabbage - 2 small heads of cabbage, washed and stems trimmed. I usually like to remove one or two outer leaves as well.
    • Olive Oil - 2 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) to coat the cut cabbage steaks.
    • Salt & Pepper - ½ tablespoon of each, salt & pepper (Himalayan or sea salt & freshly ground pepper are best). Try some great steak seasoning instead!

There are lots of ways to personalize your baked cabbage steaks, including finishing the steaks with some butter or a tasty sauce. Or, wrap a slice or two of bacon around the outer edges of your cabbage steaks for a heartier dish!

*Be sure to see the free printable recipe card below for ingredients, exact amounts & instructions with tips!*

🔪 How To Make Baked Cabbage Steaks

Baked cabbage steaks are prepped in only 10 minutes and then the oven does all of the work! All you need is a chef's knife, a basting brush, and a baking sheet.

This recipe will make 8 baked cabbage steaks. It's enough to feed the whole family, plus some delicious leftovers!

Process image 1 showing oil and brush.
Process image 2 showing cabbage slices with coated oil over them.
Process image 3 showing cabbage slices with seasoning.
    1. Preheat. Preheat your oven to 400°F (205°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
    2. Cut cabbage into steaks. Slice the stems off of each head of the 2 small cabbages, then cut the cabbage in half. Cut each half in half once more. You should have 4 round cabbage steaks (roughly ¾-1 inch thick) from each head.
    3. Season cabbage steaks. Transfer the cabbage steaks to your prepared baking sheet, leaving space between them so they cook properly. Brush them thoroughly with 2 tablespoons of olive oil and season with ½ tablespoon of each salt and pepper. Flip the steaks over then oil and season the opposite side.
    4. Bake and serve. Bake at 400°F (205°C) for 25-30 minutes. They are ready when the leaves become brown and the center is fork-tender. Remove from the oven and serve while warm.

Combine these cabbage steaks with a main protein dish and starch for a balanced and healthy meal! They would be incredibly delicious with my baked chicken quarters and microwave-baked sweet potatoes! Enjoy!

    💭 Angela's Tips & Recipe Notes

    • If you trim too much of the stem off before slicing your 'steaks' you can sometimes have cabbage that falls apart. Opt for trimming slightly until your steaks are cut.
    • Add a little kick by sprinkling the baked cabbage steaks with a pinch of red pepper flakes!
    • For a tasty crunch, sprinkle a mix of Parmesan and breadcrumbs over the top of the steaks before baking. You can also add crispy chopped bacon!

    🥡 Storing & Reheating

Once cooled, these cabbage steaks can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3 days. I do not recommend freezing cabbage steaks.

    Reheating Baked Cabbage Steaks

You can easily reheat these cabbage steaks in the microwave. Alternatively, you can also pop them back in the oven at 350°F (175°C) until the outside begins to crisp up and they are warmed to your satisfaction.

    ❓ FAQ

Should I Wash Cabbage Before Slicing?

Yes! Definitely wash your heads of cabbage, even if you plan on removing the outer leaves. Slice the cabbage after removing the tough outer leaves, then rinse your slices or wedges to remove dirt or insects that may be inside the cabbage.

    What Does Cabbage Go With?

Cabbage is so versatile and goes well with everything from chicken, pork, lamb, and beef! I really enjoy it with my roasted rack of lamb, baked beef back ribs, and Asian roasted pork belly!

How Long Do Cabbage Steaks Take To Bake?

Typically around 25-30 minutes when baked at 400°F (205°C) as long as your cabbage 'steaks' have been cut about ½-inch thick. Once they're fork-tender in the center, your cabbage steaks are fully baked and ready to serve.
